RL roofscoops

Post by TheStig »

Knowing there are a lot of people who know some about cars and Rally in specific.

What is the real reason for roofscoops, They must have a reason else they would not put it on a rally car?
The only reason I know of in street racing is EXTRA wind resistance...

so???

there is debate what they do on a specific rally car (some put a navigational unit next to it), but most of the time it's simple - they are used to feed air into the cockpit - since many rally cars don't use AC (AC takes up to 10 hp). Imagine driving in 35C hot weather and wearing a helmet.

I know Peugeot 206 WRC cars used AC on some stages last year, like Cyprus that's very hot...

yep, and actually if you have ever been in a car with a roof scoop, the amount of air that enters is surprisingly large. Because it's elevated from the windscreen and sucked right down the scoop. It's a good thing, but for track car - because in real life AC is best, esp. when you sit in traffic downtown for 2 hours.

Here is a dude intalling a real one: http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/synist ... synistrwrx

Roof scoops are only good in race cars, as explained above. If you put a rs on your car, you probably won't drill a hole in the roof, because imagine what woulld happen in rainy day's.... That's right. You would get a free shower. So, if you don't output the scoop to the inside, it's only sense is to create a HUGE air drag, and loud noise.

OK, let's get something straight. Roof scoop creating drag? Not more than any spoiler you put on your car - since 99% of spoilers are worthless. If you own a car without AC - it's not that bad. The amount of air that goes in at 30mph is a lot. I know. So rs has more function at the end of the day than the spoiler.

The water doesn't drip - they are are filters installed, it's not a simple hole inside your roof.

Also, back to drag - roof scoop, a professional one - has a hole on entrance, and small one on exit - so air passes through it as well, not just inside the car (it would get ripped off at high speeds)

And yes, most people who install it are using a dummy. The real one requires cutting a hole in a roof. So IMO roof scoops are only for rally cars, cars used at track - to keep that air going inside, pure function, so that you don't have a sauna in your car - anyone who drove a car on track or rally, will know how hot it gets inside your Stilo helmet, and all the way down to the footwells!

Paco, you are right: Properly made roofscoops work well. But no regular car user who puts a rs un his car will do it right. They wont have a exit hole from the rs, so at 120, the air would accumulate in the rs, grating high air pressure into it, so the roof would be bumped in, and eventually the rs would be ripped off, along with part of the roof. so kids leave your roof the way it is, and if you don't have an ac, open the vindow and drive Ace Ventura style.
