Unlocking certain cars with a certain class

Hey guys, I was curious about the whole unlocking certain cars with a certain class.

I started muscle, and at the end of the game.
Got a chance to use the Skyline in the quick race mode and loved it.

When I beat the area it told me to beat I got the Corvette, not the Skyline.
So I see it all depends on what car you use.

Doe's it work in the sense if I beat a certain area with a muscle,
then go back with another car class and win those races, I might
be able to unlock the car for that class, or is it all based on what
car class you start with?
