A quote from http://www.ntu.edu.au/education/langs/j ... intro1.htm

"Japanese Writing
General Nature

Directions of Writing Japanese can be written either horizontally or vertically. When written vertically, the columns read from right to left, and since this continues across pages these also advance from right to left - that is, what might seem back to front to English readers. When written horizontally the lines and the pages of books normally proceed from left to right, and as in English. Occasionally, however, one may see a car or truck with horizontal writing that proceeds from the front of the vehicle towards the back - and thus right-to-left on one side and left-to-right on the other - as if it were to be read off bit by bit as the vehicle passed by."

I guess that's why. The words all start from the front of the car towards the rear of the car, despite the fact that one side will be wrong for "western" thinking.
