NFS:U Game Exits After Splash Screen

I had some computer trouble recently, and I lost all my files. I've reinstalled NFSU, and patched it to 1.4 (so I can play online). When I start the game, I get the splash screen, then the first loading screen and just before it plays the intro movies it exits back to the desktop. No errors are shown.

I looked on EA's site and they put it down to my drive not being able to read the disc. The disc looks fine to me though, and it read it fine yesterday (before I lost all my files). I waded through topic after topic here too, finding no answer.

Any help appreciated.

Pufff. no idea. It is probably due to your recent computer trouble. Have you reinstalled your OS??

I thought that too, but I don't understand how it could affect it.

Yes I did. When I had trouble yesterday, I got rid of the lot and started from scratch.
