FD Sprint Challenge

Postby EcksOa » 21 Dec 2006, 14:06

Credit for the idea for this thread / challenge goes to Evilmegamonkey. I started it here, hopefully with his blessing, to get discussion of his challenge going on in this section.

FD Challenge:
Lofty Heights Downhill Sprint[0 opponents]
RX-7 only, No NOS, No Speedbreaker

Try and beat 1:50:xx

Okay. Played a little with some performance settings, and was able to get into the 1:50:890 range. No NOS and no Speedbreaker, as specified, with the FD3S, or the RX-7 as it's better known. I'll post a shadow of my run to the leader board section of this site.

Not sure if by beating 1:50.xxx that a time of at least 1:49.999 was needed. Anyhow, my first entry to get this going. Lots of room for improvement on my runs and I know there are much faster people than me out there. I can see some easy 48s and 47s coming soon from others under the provisions of this challenge.

http://www.nfsunlimited.net/carbon/lead ... /entry/767 1:49.990 I got this after seeing GT get his much faster time. Barely got under 1:50.xxx, but can at least say I did it.

Edit: Got down to a low 1'49"xxx, but won't upload it since it's not all that much faster than my previously uploaded shadow.

The way you tune your car might not make a huge difference like driving skill does, but it does help to play with your car's set up. See which ones seem better on the course. Though I'd look at the times as a deciding factor on that. What I thought seemed like a very slow set up the entire run, the car felt sluggish during turns and accelerating, turned out to give me my fastest times.

Tuning tips:

In the canyons you spend all of your time accelerating and turning. Therefore you should forget top speed and tune for power, acceleration and balanced handling. A neutral suspension setup works quite well with most tuners, including the RX7.

Heh, they gonna have trouble believing it, given the rest of the conversation in that thread. You better link them to this thread too so they can see it was done with no NOS or SB.

tried putting full torque instead of horsepower....it didn't shave time from about 75% to all the way down and so far my lowest time is 1:53.25

Try full horsepower, max acceleration, max velocity.

Ah, that's true. (And I didn't use NOS, as the shadow bears out). Even so, those are pretty much my 'base tune' for most cars. Just add handling from there.

Edit: Huge tip: NEVER use grip tyres.

Wow, my set up is pretty much the opposite of what GT suggested.

I went with the engine set fully to horsepower, rather than torque, assuming he meant torque when referring to power. (Edit, just read one of GT's posts. I stand corrected on that one.) Transmission is set a bit half between neutral and top speed. I tried some runs with it set more towards acceleration, didn't quite like my times, though it seemed to be running faster through the low speed corners. I guess my theory on HP over Torque is that my view is that torque is more meaningful on the uphill.

I kinda dial in a bit of oversteer on my suspension with rear bias braking.

However, his time is much faster than mine. :P

Probably the biggest obstacle to overcome, and I'm still working on that, is finding just the right speed, using just the right amount of braking, on each corner. While I'd rather brake more and not hit the wall, too much braking will slow down times, make you lose momentum during your turns.

Yeh those two are complex turns, and quite technically challenging. For the first, you should aim to run very wide, coasting past the first, gentler turn and then swing back sharply to apex the sharper turn. This is known as a J-turn. The second involves progressive braking (although you don't need to brake much). Entering, let off the gas and run wide, aiming to just miss clipping the outside wall, brake or coast a little for a second time and then turn in for the real turn.

Very difficult to describe these lines, so I made a demo shadow with a bone stock RX7. Hopefully you'll get some tips from it. The line isn't perfect - I only made one run, but as the time (1:51.59) bears out, it's not too shabby. At the rate you're going now, you should be able to keep pace.
