I don't understand what's wrong with my list... Is it because they are mostly cars from that time period that are popular now rather than during that period? Because I think players would be more interested in cars they recognize and love... And it's looking like your target market is going to consist primarily of JDM enthusiasts; the average gamer will only be interested in the latest and greatest sports cars and exotics.

Whaddaya mean, hard to find JDM cars from 1985 to 1995?
I wrote:Honda NSX Type-R (NA1)
Toyota Altezza (JCE10 - it barely scrapes in if 1999 is the latest year available)
Toyota Mark II Tourer V (JZX90)
Toyota Soarer 3.0GT (JZZ30)
Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex (AE86)
Toyota Supra 2.5 Twin Turbo R / 3.0GT Turbo (JZA70 / MA70)
Toyota Supra RZ (JZA80)
Nissan __0SX (RPS13)
Nissan 300ZX (Z32)
Nissan Silvia K's (S13)
Nissan Silvia K's (S14 - admittedly only the Zenki was available in 1995)
Nissan Skyline GT-R (BNCR33) (admittedly this was 1995-1998)
Nissan Skyline GTS-T TYPE M Coupe (ER33) (admittedly this was 1995-1998)
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4
Subaru Impreza WRX STi 22B (GC8)

...I whipped that up in roughly three minutes. Of course, the problem is that the AE86 is the only car on there from before 1989, and by cutting it back from 1999 to 1995 you cut out the Skyline R34, Silvia S15, and other important cars which are the most popular in the JDM scene.

Of course, by keeping it pre-millenia you cut out the 350Z, G35, S2000 (mostly - it was introduced in 1999), and several others, but hey, that will actually make things more interesting than anything else. Hopefully we can leave some room for expansion though, because I do really like the pre-2000 idea. :D We'd have to make sure all of our bodykits were pre-2000 too, but I guess we can be less of sticklers about that.

I am indeed liking this concept. A lot. :D

I like the carlist.

To counter balance the AE86, you could put the older celica supras and the 280sx in there as well. However, I think that the altezza is pushing it and getting out of the retro bounds and more into modern day design. I want to capture the essence of Japanese street racing BEFORE it became international phenomenon.

Okay, Lets take it from the top.

The whole theme and feel of this SHIFT is to achieve a "retro" japanese pop culture environment. Think Initial D or Tokyo Extreme Racer.

I say pre millenia because honestly, streamlined hondas, carbon fiber, neon colored vinyls, and huge airdams are all "styles" that arose after 2000. Putting these things in the game will just make the theme all the more confusing. I want this project to be a lot more tight knit than AHR. So an S15 for example would absolutely be out of the question.

As for bodykits, they would be simple and would keep with the theme of the decade. None of this new flashy stuff we see today. Besides, those can and will be in AHR since it is more modern.

I know that the tradeoff of newer vehicles is tough but it is necessary to capture and visualize the concept of older JDM style.. I believe in the end it will work.

I hope that makes sense. :)

Makes a lot of sense and I still love the concept. :)

I think we should leave room for (modded-in) R34s and S15s, though, seeing as they are still highly influential cars. I will have to see about bodykits - most (but not all) VeilSide kits are likely to be out of the question, while Do-Luck is simpler and would probably fit in.

And, about the 240Z - it stinks that it's '73 to '81, although the older 300ZX (Z31) and the 280ZX (S130) both fit in.

Chaser Tourer V JZX100 is from 1999 and thus doesn't fit, according to Korge (same reason as the Altezza and Skyline R34). Hence, I left it out on purpose.

Hmm, it would probably be a good idea to start thinking about locations. For instance, how can we not have the Bay Shore Route (Wangan Line)?

As far as the Chaser pic posted above, that is a GX81, not a JZX90. JZX90 Chasers are really ugly, even though the JZX90 Mark II looks great (in an understated way).

1991 Toyota Soarer 3.0GT (JZZ30)
1992 Toyota Mark II Tourer V (JZX90)

Im gonna need some help getting this sorted out (as I know nothing about cars).

Also, let me know if Im missing anything or need something removed.

I have amended the list to include chassis codes, for reasons of convenience. Multiple cars by the same model are sometimes made in the same year, rendering year-model designations unreliable. ;-)

  • Okay, first off, there are more Subarus in existence than just the Impreza WRX STi. There's this thing called the Legacy, you know. lol
  • The 2.0GT (GA70) variant of the _A70 Supra is the weakest variant available. The 2.5 Twin Turbo R (JZA70) or 3.0GT Twin Turbo (MA70) are much better choices. (Cosmetically, they are the same, though - it is just which engine they use.)
  • Having the 1990 "Savannah" RX-7 FC3S and the 1993 RX-7 FC3S is redundant; the cars are largely equivalent.
  • Lancer Evo II? More like III; the II never gained much popularity. Either way, the IV, V, and VI are the only pre-7 Evos that have really ever been paid attention to, and only one is really necessary.
  • Civic 1.5 VTi is a good starter car but isn't good for much else.
  • The 1999 Civic Si Coupe (EM1) was only ever sold in the US; the near-direct Japanese equivalent is the 1999 Civic Type-R Hatchback (EK9).
  • Technically, the R34 GT-R was first produced in 1999, but we can (hopefully) let that slide.
  • The "Fairlady Z (S30)" is actually the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z (which are practically identical except for some engine components).
  • You may want to reconsider the JZX90 Chaser. The JZX100 Chaser Tourer V would fit better, as the JZX90 is far less popular.

And, I think you are missing:
  • the Toyota Aristo (JZS147) / Lexus GS300 1991-1996
  • the non-GTR variants of all of the Skylines (the GTS-T variants were and are popular too)

Bouncing some more ideas around:
- Subaru Alcyone SVX? This car is often overlooked but it was considered Subaru's flagship sports car in the early 1990's.
- This is the JZS147 Aristo, also known as 1993-1997. This is the JZX161 Aristo, or the 1998-2002 one. Either is fine by me, but I figured I would point that out. :D
- I like the list Viper16 posted on the last page, for the most part. FYI, though, it would be easier to handle the 180SX / Silvia S13 / Onevia / Sileighty as one car, if it is at all possible, because you could somehow change out the body parts (front end is one part; rest of the car, including the rear end, is the other).
- I think the Chaser JZX90 should be replaced by JZX100 but, again, this is a matter of personal preference more than anything.

Wowzah. Half of those cars that Stig posted I have never even seen before. O_O

Thats what I want though, real JDM cars that fit the era. Perfect.

We gotta get this car list organized. Im working on a program to prototype a game menu. One that allows you to pick and buy a car from a class and pick options. Later I will add customization and stats.

We will need to get the details for all these cars, including trim, colors, and price of course.

Trim levels are largely unnecessary, except in cars like the Skyline where the trim levels are vastly different. For the Civic or something, one trim level will probably suffice. In fact, most of these ARE specific trim levels.

I can help you sort out this list (e.g. make some sense of which cars go where on the performance ranking), if you need it. For instance, the Stagea is basically a four-door R34 GT-R wagon - in fact, they make a kit that makes the front end into an R34's front end. Also, all of the cars except the Toyota MR2, Celicas, Nissan Silvia, Nissan Skyline, Nissan Stagea, and Mitsubishi Starion on that list are front-wheel drive (and thus not necessarily as good performance-wise).

Some of those are indeed pretty obscure; the best test for how popular a car is (or was) is to look for performance parts and body kits for the car. If you can't find any, it's likely that it's pretty obscure and wasn't very popular. (No, "ricer companies" like Erebuni and Wings West do not count. :P They're American anyway.)

Hope the list was usefull.

Sure a lot of cars in there are FWD cars, but then most japanese cars where FWD.

You did not state it will be a drifting game, so I picked cars that had a sporty look and where pretty popular in Japan.
Sure cars like the Starlet Glanza V look pretty useless, but they where pretty popular in Japan (small car, low running costs) and you can get performance and visual upgrades for them, as for most cars in the list.

(several of the not so good performance wise cars where also in GT4  )

What about the Legend, Maxima, and Camry? The older ones, not these new ones.

Legend actually sounds useful. Camry and Maxima are instantly struck down, by virtue of being FWD, slow, and un-tunable except by ricers. (Not to mention they're actually designed mainly for the United States and world markets and they are virtually non-existant in Japan itself.)
