Oh you'd be suprised, Kei-cars have a dedicated following. Autozams, Beats and Cappucinos can make a mean little track beast! Although, Kei-cars would mostly be used for gymkhana and auto-x, not blasting down the Wangan

Viper16 said the Maxima was popular.

The talk of these kei-cars reminds me of the Super Street article on the Yashio Factory Toyota Vitz. Although it was no good for top speed, it had a lot of get up and go, especially for its small size and low weight.

Dunno about the Maxima. You won't see any of them racing or drifting, and I don't see many kitted out in VIP or show style either.

Popular among grandpas, maybe?

Oh well I didnt know.

However, I am thinking that the Honda Legend would be workable, but Im not sure.

And I think that the Kei-Cars could fit in the game in their own category maybe? or used for only certain races like you said.

I think the Kei cars are a decent edition to a JDM game, there is nothing more JDM then Kei.

I forgot about the Cappuccino, the Subaru Vivio (which I mentioned) is also a Kei car.

Cappucino would indeed be great. It's as light or lighter than a Miata and RWD, which would make it the equivalent of a go-cart when tuned :P

BTW, I have no idea where people keep getting the idea that the Maxima is related to the Cefiro. The A32 and A33 Cefiros were sold as Infinitis in the United States, but they were FWD and powered by a V6 - the Cefiros that are actually used for drift racing are the A31s, which were powered by an RB20 (read: low-trim Skyline engine) and had RWD.

well, if the cars are broken up by class (D, C, B, A, and S), where would the kei cars fit? I know they can be upgraded, but still, you can only go so far.

You should make it so the cars will upgrade into the other classes when you mod them. For example a Honda Civic or CRX would probably start in the lowest class, but they can be turned into devastatingly fast cars with a bit of work, which could put it into A.

Kei-cars might need to start in their own class (K-class?) 'cos they are pretty slow in stock trim.

Kei cars are pretty slow, but I think they can be pretty nice for small tracks with tight corners etc.

IMO slow cars can be fun in a game, as long as the challenges are nice.

I personally liked to drive D class cars in Forza, sure they weren't fast, but the competition was more equally matched, it was all about the best line etc.
The High S and U spec races where simply who could keep the car on the track at sometimes insane speeds.
and they where dominated by certain cars (same goes for the Racing classes)

I agree 100% stig. I prefer d and c class cars because its easier and more casual.

So let me get this straight. The K class cars would only be able to raced in Gymkhana, correct? If so, I think that makes sense, and these cars should be cheap enough to at least own one for the K class.

Kei cars are used on the track too: http://i43.tinypic.com/i5nek0.jpg
But that is a rather extreme example as you can see.

Also you should have the Autozam AZ-1 instead of the Carol.
The AZ-1, Beat and Cappuccino are the most commonly used for motorsports, and they are known as the "Sporty Kei-cars' ABC."

Ehh...

If players want to take kei cars to the track, fine. All races should be given class options, but I dont want to force players to have to play using the kei cars. Think of it similar to how SUVs were in Underground 2. The races were not mandatory.. xD

They were if you wanted 100% game complete lol

Keicars sound like a good separate class, although I do agree that they should be able to qualify for higher classes as you upgrade them.

Personally, I don't like the idea of a rigid class system. I think it should be a bit more "fuzzy-logic" than that:
  • There would be a numeric ranking for each car, on a scale of (say) 0-1000. Ranking would be determined by a combination of horsepower figures, weight, and a few other factors, but there should be a rigid algorithm for determining the number. (The "fuzzy logic" comes in a bit later and uses this figure.)
  • In addition to the number, each car has a set of "descriptions" assigned to it. Some of these descriptions could be "Nissan (or any other brand) Vehicle", "400+HP", "Hyperlight (>2800lbs)", "Four-Door Sedan", "Inline-Six Engine", and other similar ones.
  • Races or race events would have restrictions on which cars you could use, with a "between numeric rankings X and Y" restriction (or not), "requires this description" restriction, and/or "cannot have this description" restriction.
  • Numbers and descriptions change when the car is modified and qualifies for a new descriptor or moves up or down the numeric scale.
Like it? Too complicated? Again, I'm just throwing the idea into the thread for consideration.

This sounds a lot to simulators to the likes of Forza 2. I see this as necessary.

I had the idea of allowing servers to hide this information in Multiplayer free roam. This would promote the idea of players building and racing "sleepers."

The idea of assigning "tags" to cars based on important characteristics makes sense. It would also help limit car choices in multiplayer races other than simply saying "C Class Only."

Is that what you are meaning?

That's exactly what I mean. I'm glad you like the idea!

Also, by "C Class Only", that's sort of what the numeric values are intended to replace >_>. (The idea is that you can draw your own boundaries on how good the cars are, to allow more arbitrary class-choosing than a rigid letter class system.)

@ EvoMaster: What's an Evo WI? I think you mean VII or VIII or VI. There has never been a WI, because W is not a Roman numeral for anything.
