Command & Conquer 3

Post by 2furio »

The most exciting news in a while...Command & Conquer is back!!! (insert thousands of smilies). I will start with some small information. Remember to watch this spot for more updates.

"PCGamer promised a return of the biggest RTS franchise, and in the upcoming June issue they deliver. Command & Conquer 3 is upon us, and according to the PCG front cover scans (US version, not UK) its all about a new race, new story, and a new war. Set in the Tiberium Universe, Kane is back, and apparently FMVs will be back. There are no specific details yet as to the contents, 2007 release date, but apparently an official announcement is due soon, and we will of course have coverage on it live from E3 in Los Angeles next month."

I can barely contain my excitement. :D

The official announcement:

http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php ... ad&order=0

EA today announced that its C&C RTS franchise is returning in full force with Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. This next chapter takes the series back to its roots in the Tiberium universe and features the fast, fluid gameplay that C&C is known for and a gripping story that will redefine storytelling in RTS games.

It is 2047 and the stakes could not be higher. Tiberium—a self-replicating alien substance that has infected the Earth—is spreading like a radioactive ice age. The GDI, a high-tech alliance of the world's most advanced nations, is fighting to contain Tiberium, but Kane, the megalomaniacal leader of The Brotherhood of NOD has other plans for Earth. Kane's secret society turned superpower is bent on using Tiberium to take control and transform humanity into his twisted vision of the future. All-out war rages over Tiberium and the fate of the planet rests in the balance.

"Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars combines fast-paced gameplay with new ways to tell a story in an RTS game," said Mike Verdu, Executive Producer at EA Los Angeles (EALA). "We're building a next generation Command & Conquer game that is true to the spirit of this classic franchise, but is updated with state-of-the-art visuals, added strategic depth, and gameplay innovations that will move the genre forward. I am very excited to be working on this amazing game."

"We have been waiting to reveal this game for quite some time and are thrilled to bring the series back to where it all began," said Louis Castle, VP of Creative Development at EA Los Angeles (EALA) and co-founder of Westwood Studios, creator of the Command & Conquer series. "The Tiberium universe is a personal favourite of mine, and this saga's new direction will prove to be a worthy addition to one of the most celebrated RTS franchises."

Experience a revolution in RTS gaming with a breakthrough single player campaign that rewards you for your gameplay style. Add layers of strategy to your gaming experience by building mobile bases, wielding the power of terrifying Ion Storms on the battlefield, or customising your armies by combining units. Battle it out online with native voice-over IP, integrated clan support, and new spectator modes that let you play RTS games like a sport.

Currently in development at EALA, Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars will ship in 2007 for PC.

For more information about Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars or the Command & Conquer series, please visit http://www.CommandAndConquer.EA.com.

---------------------------------------

This is a great way to celebrate 10 years of C&C goodness and hopefully the C&C series will live on for future generations to enjoy. While I am uber excited about this announcement (yes, more excited than a new NFS game announcement), EA can easily screw up this game. I will keep an open mind and hope EA will return C&C to its roots and deliver a magnificent game. They had and do have plenty of time to perfect this game.

Has anyone found the Tiberian Sun game a little bit kind of hard...also...anyone know how they came up with the number "3"?

i for one will Not be buying this

ive played CnC since i was 4, and that was with the very first CnC when it came out that year [1993 it came out, i was 4 in march 1994 :P].
Ea are a bunch of wan*ers in my opinion, buying westwood out, who actually started the whole genre of RTS gaming back with Dune II
So, ask any true CnC fan like myself, and theyll tell you the same story.
Plus CnC was modern warfare...where the **** has futuristic soldiers come into this??

Modern warfare? Since when was C&C modern? It was all about futuristic units...all C&C games have futuristic units to some extent...plus I've heard the co-creator of Westwood will keep a close eye on the project...
------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Summary of known information:

SPOILER WARNING!!!

* C&C3 will be set some time after the events in Tiberian Sun: Firestorm. As you may recall, Firestorm assumed the GDI ending in Tiberian Sun, and itself ended with GDI in the possession of the Tacitus, the Philadelphia still in orbit, Nod coming under the control of Slavik, and CABAL presumed destroyed. The final cutscene of Firestorm, however, left players with a cliffhanger that posited that both CABAL and Kane survived in some form. C&C3 begins several years later, with the GDI in control of the "safe" (Tiberium-free) zones of the Earth, and attempting to use its knowledge of the Tacticus to remove the Tiberium infestation. The story opens with a Nod assault on the Philadelphia orbital station that throws the GDI into disarray.

* A third side will be introduced, but it is as yet unknown. Speculation falls to it being either independent mutants, robots and cyborgs under the command of CABAL, or alien forces.

* Kane is set to make a return, but there is no word on whether Joseph Kucan will reprise his role as everyone's favourite sociopathic madman.

* Full-motion-video is back. The PC Gamer article hints that there will be not only in-between-mission cinematics but more in-game cinematics of the type seen in Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 (and in the non-C&C RTS Act of War).

* C&C3 will, naturally, be using a further upgraded version of the same engine that has powered Generals and both Battle for Middle-Earth games. For those of you who don't have BFME2, let me point out that its system requirements easily top those of Quake IV, so start saving up those pennies to buy the uber-system you'll likely need to run C&C3 at max detail.

* The EA project team has stated that their two biggest design goals are improving the AI and creating a more immersive campaign.

* Multiplayer will feature voice chat support.

* GDI units known to be making a comeback include the Orca and the Mammoth Tank, though any art of these units at this time is liable to be entirely temporary.

* No news on whether the interface will be Generals-style or traditional C&C-sidebar style. None of the screenshots or other art in the PC Gamer article included any pictures of a HUD.

* It is extremely unlikely that C&C3 will come out this year. A reasonable estimate for the release date is midway through 2007 - in other words, a summer blockbuster for next year. Or to put it in more plain words... wait until next spring before dropping your cash on a new system.

* As they did with BFMEII, EA is planning several "community summits" to bring C&C fans (modders, fansite operators, other prominent community members) down to their Los Angeles studios for previews and discussions.

I only bought C&C Generals and the update that came with it.

I never like the futuristic stuff from the other C&C games. way to weird for me.
I like the Generals part cause it was using alot of current stuff and was not to far in the future and it was on realistic grounds.

this is way to starwars for me...

I've always loved the C&C games (other than Renegade and Generals). They all had a certain spark and magic in them. All missions were different and well it's very hard to explain but the games are good.

Renegade is a mess...FPS and C&C do not mix.

Generals, well it had nothing to do with either the Tiberian or Red Alert universe and the focus on the (stupid) Americans and terrorists is just lame. I also didn't like the graphics. I prefer the urban/post-apocolyptic atmosphere. Lastly, the game had no storyline.

That's another thing about the other C&C, the storyline was amazing. Even though it was just another RTS, the story was different and made each level/mission more exciting and hopefully C&C 3 will offer than good ol' feeling.

Although a General was a good game, i'll felt a little uncomfartbale with the constant stream of pro-american message. USA where the only team that was represented as a good team, with their constant little dialouges, such as "we are protectors of free world" and "we are freedom fighters" blah, blah... And then you just got China and Al-Qaeda (which is obviously what it is) who are the "Evil teams".

Not that I condone terrorism in any way, put I often played the GLA, fighting against the mighty powerhouses.

Well atleast Generals did not have the old cliche: the big bad Russians that come to take over the free world.

Yeah it was pro American but so where most other C&C games, IMO there was more of a storyline to the career mode then with some other C&C games I played cause there it was most of the time... build a base defeat enemy. DONE.

And I liked to play with the Chinese (who weren't the bad guys in the careermode  )
even better was to steal stuff and build a big base with US and Chinese material you had a almost undefeateble army if you did it right 8)

EA: The Essential E3 Preview
...including C&C3 and a new Battlefield game (which has been announced earlier)...
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?optio ... 9&Itemid=2

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (working title)

Command and Conquer was birthed in the Tiberium Universe, a familiar near-future Earth where Tiberium is the only resource of any value and the Global Defense Initiative has to constantly violently check the Brotherhood of NOD. It’s also the universe where many an RTS fan was born, but it’s been on the shelf for years since the Tiberian Sun expansion pack came out over six years ago.

Its long hiatus will soon be over, but even that was a recent revelation, and there’s not of detail to relay on this one. Tiberium has become a cancer to the planet, the NOD want to keep it way, and the GDI have to stop them. The press release seems to indicate a new way of storytelling within strategy games, which is certainly interesting. It also talks of mobile bases, which should confound old strategies quite a bit.

The old guard RTS fans probably know enough, though. The original C&C universe is back.

A few more interesting bits:

There's a few posts on the official C&C 3 boards made by the C&C community manager Aaron "Apoc" Kaufman that you might be interested in. First, we have couple of posts that don't reveal much, but sure give us hope:

"I'd keep your hopes very high for this return of the MCV (hint hint) :o)"

"I can't speak on our plans with Kane right now, but...that's all I can say right now :o)"

Futhermore, he posted a bit of info regarding the upcoming E3 show:

"We will be at E3 with more than just an amazing kick *** incredible 360 trailer. We're working on a full blown out 1st official trailer for the game, and we will be having a special presentation at E3 which I expect you'll be hearing the press talk about quite a bit during the show.

If you're going, I'm the short 5" 5 guy riding around the E3 floor on a scooter."

PC Gameplay had an interview with executive producer Mike Verdu and game designer Jason Bender.
• It´s the year 2047. From an unknown location a nuclear missile is fired at the high-tech GDI spacebase Philadelphia. Millions of people witness an enormous flash and see Philadelphia going down. Kane and his Brotherhood of NOD laugh at the sight. Right after the attack Kane orders his elite Black Hand Shock Troopers to eliminate any remaining GDI troops and to cause terror all over the world. NOD uses the media for example for propaganda. The GDI is about to be destroyed. One brave GDI officer however doesn´t want to give up. He plans to unite the spreaded en demoralised GDI troops. He is going to take the battle on against the great NOD army. You are that GDI officer. Welcom back, Commander.
• 3 campaigns, GDI, NOD and a not yet revealed party. The magazine hopes it will be the Aliens (Scrin). In the GDI campaign you eventually have a big battle against NOD and eventually you will have to capture Kane.
• The NOD campaign is totally different. You follow the orders of Kane and you have to make his plan work. At the start of the mission you usually don´t know what the goal is. NOD wants to get as many civilians to join them so they can capture certain locations and defeat GDI. NOD is working on a secret Tiberiumproject which is revealed pretty late in the game.
• Mike Verdu didn´t want to say a lot about the third party. Only that it has a strong bond with Tiberium and that their goal is to spread Tiberium all over the planet.
• The campaignmap is devided in several coloured zones. Blue zones (30% of the map) are zones that almost haven´t been harmed by Tiberium and that haven´t suffered from great wars. About 20% of the world population lives here. There are also yellow zones (50% of the map). About 80% of the human population lives here. The yellow zones have suffered a lot from the many Tiberium wars and are highly toxicated by Tiberium. Finally there are the red zones. These zones have a lot of tiberiumcrystals, humans can´t live here.
• GDI wants to get rid of the Tiberium, but on the other hand they also need Tiberium to fund the war. NOD sees Tiberium as the future (mutating people).
• CC3 has to be fast, fluid and fun Verdu and Bender say. Fast gameplay, units that quickly follow orders, a good view on the battlefield without hassle with the camera and pure pleasure are things that have to make CC3 a great RTS title.
• By looking at the screenshots CC3 will be more like the first CC than Tiberian Sun.
• GDI Orca, GDI Mammoth Tank, NOD Stealth Tank, NOD Flame Tank and the Commando are units that appear in CC3. The creators of CC3 still have doubts about the NOD Underground units.
• GDI has one giant Mech unit and NOD also has a sort of Mech unit.
• The advanced Tiberian Sun units like the Cyborgs and the Banshees are gone or will return somehow in the third party.
• Infantry plays an important role in CC3. NOD and GDI have Riflemen, Missile Troopers and Grenadiers. GDI has a Commando with stealth options which still can destroy buildings with one click. Also the GDI can use the heavy armoured Zone Trooper which is immune to the effects of Tiberium. GDI also has an APC in which you can put different types of infantry. The infantry can capture buildings and from there fire at the enemy (Urban Combat). Also infantry can capture neutral buildings and so get extra bonuses. GDI also has a very fast scout Buggy with a turret. Also they have a more modern version of the Mobile Rocket Launcher System (MRLS). GDI also has a unit called The Ridge, a mobile repair unit and a medic has to take care of the infantry. A medic is needed because CC3 units can gain experience which makes them stronger, they do more damage and often get extra bonuses.
• CC3 for an important part uses a system of upgrades for units, not special abilities. Jason Bender says that there still are some special abilities, like tanks that can dig their selves in so that only the turret is visible. This way the tank is stronger but not mobile. Bender says they decided to give unit upgrades a more important role. Take the Overlord tank from Generals for example which could be equipped with anti-air turrets. But the essence of the Overlord tank stayed the same, a very heavy tank that could do a lot of damage. This is also what the creators are going to apply in CC3. You can give the vehicles something extra. For example you can give a tank an anti-air extra or give a fast scout unit an anti-tank extra.
• The creators also added some new elements to the CC-universe. They wanted to reveal 3 of them. Mobile bases, controllable weather effects and combine two units to get a different type of unit. The mobile base is new for CC and is only for the third party. The base of the third party will be one big moving base, with smaller buildings that are connected with each other. This base can be moved in full, so that you can take them near to Tiberium on the map. This moving base can also be used as one big super unit because of defensive turrets.
• Also new in CC3 is that you can steer your Ion Storms. By doing this you do damage to enemy units, but there are also units in the game that can heal in an Ion Storm.
• The combining of one unit with an other unit is also going to be surprising. This feature particularly goes for the third party, but also GDI and NOD can combine different units to a new unit. For example you can combine a tank with a flying scout unit, or you can combine the NOD Stealth Tank with a different unit so that it also gets Stealth. Bender has always been fascinated by the relationship between the Ghost and the Nuclear Strike in Starcraft. This system of depending on each other is also going to be introduced in CC3. For example you can target a spot with the GDI Spotter which can be destroyed by an Orca Air Strike.

Interview

Why did you guys wait so long with making a new CC?
Mike Verdu: CC3 has been in development for a long time, but it took a while before everyone was at the same line and for the technology to become better. One thing is for sure: everything that is working on the project is very happy that we are going to make GDI and NOD come back to live.

To avoid possible misunderstandings: does this new CC3 still have anything to do with CC3: Tiberian Twilight that was dropped off several years ago?
Mike Verdu: For a while we worked on a new CC, but the development didn´t go as we expected so the game was put on hold for a while.

Who is developing this new CC?
Mike Verdu: CC3 is developed by EALA which helped with the development of Red Alert 2, CC: Generals and Battle For Middle Earth 1 and 2. At this time about 60 programmers and artists in Los Angeles work on the game.

What can we expect of the graphics?
Jason Bender: CC3 uses the latest 3D RTS-engine of EALA, a much more improved version of the engine that was used for Battle for Middle Earth 2. CC3 has an incredible detail, great light- and Bloom-effects and advanced features like Normal Maps. The water also looks amazing, but in particular it will be the explosions that are going to steal the show!

The CC-universe is known for it´s great FMV (Full Motion Video) sequences and animations. What can we expect of this new title?
Mike Verdu: A classic CC-game has to have a spectacular FMV-presentation, so the FMV-sequences will return in all their glory and will look better.

Will Joseph Kucan again take the role of Kane?
Mike Verdu: At the moment we can´t say that with certainty because we just started with the casting. But we already can say with certainty that EVA will return.

What can we expect of the multiplayer options?
Jason Bender: CC3 will of course feature the classic options and will have integrated clan-options and feature Voice-over-internet-Protocol. Currently we are working hard on the AI Style of Play-options. With this you can give the AI certain game styles which than can be chosen by the player. Do you want to practice in attacking with a rush, than give the AI Player Rush. If you want to build your base slowly and destroy a well defended enemy slowly but good than set the AI to Turtle. And so there will be a lot of game styles that are inspired by the AI of Generals and Zero Hour but that will be a lot more advanced if it´s about AI.

That all sounds very good. One last question: when can we expect CC3: Tiberium Wars in stores?
Mike Verdu: That will be somewhere in 2007. We can´t say when exactly at this time.

May I thank you for this interview?
Mike and Jason: It was a pleasure.

Since the last post was so long and nobody replied, I will double post to post more information and if a moderator objects, then...well he can join the 2 posts.
------------------------

I will start with this small bit of information (to may not interest most but meh...):

Frank Klepacki has sent along his May newsletter, with an especially important revelation for C&C3 fans:

REGARDING C&C3:

SO MANY emails have been coming in asking whether or not Frank is involved in scoring C&C3. We are posting a statement from Frank on the matter:
"I must say I heard about it same as everyone else did, so I haven't had any involvement in it."

Ok, ok, so most of all would ask so who the hell is this guy? Well...this guy composed the music and worked on the sound design on ALL Command & Conquer games from the original to Red Alert 2 so him not working the sound design for the new C&C3....well....kind of worries me...
----------------------------------------------

EDIT (May 2, 2006):

Apoc has something to say to all of you who have been criticizing some of the concepts revealed in the C&C 3 previews. This was posted on the official C&C 3 boards:

This is just a general statement to you guys. I realize there might be some confusion going on with the current information released, some of you are angry, some of you...too angry :o) ...but I understand, and most of you are at peace and would just like further details.

I will work hard with the development team to clear up what I can before E3 and after E3.

I said something similar to this in another thread which bears repeating:

There is a lot to be said for the mystique behind a game, especially one like Command and Conquer 3. You guys think you know a lot, but you've hardly scratched the surface. I fully realize you have been graciously patient over the years for a new game in the Tiberian world and now that the dream is come true, you're hungry for every detail possible and anxious to analyze every detail right down to the very pixel.

We have a great journey in front of us as we unleash more and more about Command and Conquer 3, and I promise you we have an extremely dedicated, passionate, and motivated development team here who will bring you a memorable C&C 3 experience that of course takes your values and opinions in to high consideration and further. I'm not the only one reading all the message boards, i've got a development team of community managers behind me who read them as well if you can imagine.

Just wanted to say that, continue discussing, I'll see what I can help to clear up going forward :o)

Since people on this board are not C&C fans that much, I don't think it would be wise to just update the news, especially since most of it comes from http://www.planetcnc.com

Hahaha, it wouldn't be the Tiberium age without the Messiah, so of course he'd be back.
Damn I'm loving how all the old buildings have received a warm refurbishment, at least I know that I'll be needing the new computer for this.
Anyone else lost count of the amount of Ion cannon strikes he's lived through?

By the way 2furio, checked out gametrailers.com lately?
