NFSUnlimited.net redesign

Post by Bojan »

With three games coming out this year, the top bar has become too small to fit all games we (will) cover.

I'm looking for ideas on how a new design should look like and since my graphical skills are on a level of a 10 year old, I thought it's best I look right here.

If you have any suggestions, please post them here. If I actually use your idea in the final website, you get a NFSUnlimited tshirt :)

Thanks.

How about some sort of mouseover menu? Shouldn't be too hard to write/find some cross-browser script.

Or are you wanting something along the lines of a traditional "top menu" like we have now?

It is, but if that's the way Bojan wants to go, it needs to compatible across all browsers out there currently (Firefox, IE 6,7,8, Safari, Chrome). IE8 makes significant headway to being standards compliant, but old versions still require workarounds to get certain javascript methods to work (which breaks the script in browswers that are standards compliant).

Personally, I hate the current header.

I NEVER visit any of the NFS game links. Also, the Showroom should be a main tab at the top.

In fact, Id like to see Home, Forum, and Showroom grouped together, and the rest of the games tabs should be placed elsewhere.

Why cant this site have a left side nav bar?

Wasted space when you consider the forums.

Considered:

You did not explain how that has anything to do with what I suggested. The forum is so narrow anyways it shouldnt matter.

Sorry, should've been more specific. I meant that a left sidebar would be wasted space since most pages on NFSUnlimited are quite long (even if you don't consider the forum).

Bojan, are you looking for graphical solutions, or just ideas? I mean, if you want, I'm sure some of us could punch up a mock prototype in a few minutes.

Since he said "graphical skills" I would think he would want a complete legit design and not just an idea.

If the site were to get a full overhaul, I would like the site to be a bit wider. But from Bojans post, I would guess he just wants to modify the top part to accommodate the 3 new games.

Um... I had a design going for NFSpeed, which I will probably never use. Korge has seen it, if you want I'll PM you some pics... It needs a bit of touching up and needs to be finished, but as soon as I get a bit further with Korge's webpage I bet I could work on it some for you.

Ah, I should've been a bit more specific.
I'm looking for a graphical mockup - more like an idea of how you'd imagine the site to look like.

Width should be around 970px +- 10px. I'm looking for a top menu solution. If you need the gunship font, you can get it here: http://www.dafont.com/gunship.font

Don't worry about html and javascript, that will be done on my part.

Would you be opposed to using flash? I have an idea, but its implementation would most likely require flash.

No sorry, flash is something I'm really against :)

In fact if anybody comes up with a nice logo I could expand into a website design, I'd be really happy.

Would using the NFS logo be copyright infringement?

Me too.. I surf this site using an iPod touch, and it doesn't support flash. So it'd be great if flash was 'banned' from the logo. :P

I bet I can scribble up a blueprint during a class (math lol,) and re-do it later in paint for you. I actually do this for all my sites, shouldn't be hard. :P

Did a bit of messing around today. This is what I'm looking at right now.

When you mouse over the current NFS a list of games drops down.
Top grey area needs a good logo.

All suggestions welcome.

Have more details and stuff. Looks nice but make it look more complete. And can the forum go back to the old dark blue setup? Or can we at least have a choice? I liked that blue forum theme in 2004.

Its such a relief. More thinking space. I like it. Although it would be good to differentiate the main links and the secondary links in the menu. At first glance, it looked like a jumble of words.

I think that's just a sample. Doubt it's gonna look like that at all.. I still remembered when this current design was still a template - it was a complete mess. ;)
