S2000_Skyline12 wrote:What you really need to do is get a 8800GT, 9600GT or 8800GTS G92 from evga b-stock. 8600GT isn't that good, considering if you play in resolutions higher than 1280, and even then, it's not that good (I already had one for 4 months and I quickly changed to a 9600GT which is a HUGE step from the 8600GT. I recently changed to a 8800GTS G92 but you get what i'm saying). Lower reses are fine but otherwise, go for a more powerful card. And getting a E2180 wouldn't be smart either. E5200s are out, but even then I wouldn't suggest it. Core 2 Duo is right on for gaming, where then I would suggest a E7200. Gets to 4GHz and is a 45nm cpu giving it a higher thermal maximum. And never get a OEM processor. You'd never know if it was used, abused and it has a shotty warranty.

I would suggest a system like this.

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200
2GB G.Skill or Corsair XMS DDR2 800 (A member here, Carcrazy recently had some OCZ ram crap out on him, so I wouldn't suggest it.)
nVidia choices: eVga 8800GT AKIMBO (Because of the dual slot cooling) or eVga 8800GTS G92
ATi choices: HD4850 or HD4870 XOC Edition
OCZ Vendetta 2 (very good cooler)
eVga 780i Ultra ATX mobo
if going for XFire then: DFI X48 LanParty Dark mobo
OS: Vista Ultimate x64 (So you can upgrade to 4GB if you'd like)

This system would be set for gaming, for a while. And you would have 4GB as a option to upgade to. It isn't overkill for vista mainly cause vista properly allocates the ram, and you would have pretty much the smoothest experience possible on Vista. Also, games like Crysis Warhead "say" 2GB is recommended, but it will eat that 2GB like a light snack. So 4GB would be good to use, especially if you're a high res gamer, going into reses 1650 and higher.

Though. if you're 1920 res gaming, a 4870, GTX280 or 4870X2 would be highly suggested.
Dude... He was looking at spending $200 Not $1200. From S2K's list, the ATI cards are the ones to get at the moment.

Your Radeon that maxxes Halo 2, is nothing that amazing...I ran halo on high on a FX5600, it's not a demanding game. You probably vouldn't run both cards at once, and it's be cheaper and better to get a PCI-E mobo and PCI-E card I think.

If you can't stretch the budget much, 8600GT for $200 will do, and although won't be able to max everything, will still look decent and serve you fairly well. If you run a high res 22" monitor or whatever, maybe look at stretching the budget. About my CPU choice, it's a bit outdated, look at newer ones around the price range.

It's better for him to save his money and get some good stuff though, if he's gaming at least, playing stuff like GoW, Crysis and hoping to play Undercover smoothly at 1280 or higher, if not and he's a light gamer, then the 86 would be just fine. And I tried to run Halo 2 on a 8600GT and a Celeron D 3.33GHz that I OCed to 4.2GHz, couldn't get fps for crap. So, I would really suggest a Core2Duo for gaming. Just saying, it's better to save and get things you'll enjoy for a while, than to buy some stuff, find out it's not good and have to buy a new video card, new CPU...you see where i'm going. I'd know, cause it happened to me.

Erm....

My 8400M GS runs Halo on highest perfectly fine. Halo 2, on the other hand, is a COMPLETELY different story. In all seriousness Halo 2 is a pretty demanding game specs-wise. I can only run it on lowest to keep it going at 30 FPS...but thats besides the point anyways because Halo 2 is shiznit compared to 1 and 3...

Well then is it a question of processor or RAM then? 'Cause if I put it in higher resulution than 800x600 it skips frames. Not very useful when taking out those dastardly hunters....

Halo 2 is not demanding... it was when it was released on Xbox, but not today. But still, what is your Radeon model? if it's an X1950, then that's actually pretty good.

@PCBuilder14: Just tell us what u have now and the cash u have. What monitor do u run?

It's an ATI HIS Radeon X1650 Pro AGP Single Slot Fan card with 512mb DDR2, Dual link DVI, with TV Out.

Here's the exact place I got it from.

AHh, not bad, was a decent card, but it's outdated by now. Not sure if an 8400 is leaps and bounds ahead. And your budget? and monitor?

I have a budget of $70, I know that's low.

And I have a Viewsonic 17" CRT Monitor. I really want a LCD!

Good God, $70? Are you serious? That's like, beyond low...

BTW: Unless you're in need of desk space like I was, or made of cash, I'd suggest you stay with your CRT. If you really do want an LCD, look for a refurbished if you're on a budget, don't go low for a cheap/crappy one... :P

Ok... budget of $70... now, if your budget wasn't $70, I'd say 8600GTS or whatever, but like, it's AGP, old and you won't do better with $70. Maybe u can get an ex demo LCD, but it'll only be $70... but my advice is save at least $500 for the PC itself, then more if you want a better screen.

Get this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130356

It's a 9600GSO for $50... For that money it'll definetly be better than a 7600 and what you have now. It's even better than my old 7900GS.

PS. If you're looking for an AGP-only card, then you could try the Radeon 3650

Ah, my bad. :P

*slams hands in oven door*

Oh yeah, I think I decided on my replacement RAM since I'm fed up with this damn OCZ B.S. Freakin' stick died, after all that trouble they gave me.

Anyway, Corsair changed the chips they were using in their budget RAM, and people were reporting DOA's and having to RMA often, I didn't want to go back to OCZ, and I looked at Kingston's HyperX line, but decided against it since, well, let's face it... they don't exactly have a very high name on the OC/High-Performance scale...

So I found some G.Skill's! G.Skill DDR2 1000 4GB (2x2GB) Memory, with 5-5-5-15 timings. However, I'll probably be running these at 800Mhz instead of 1000, so I'll probably tighten the timings to around 4-4-4-12, and maybe a bit lower, depending on how nice they play with my board.

Cheap- but reliable RAM, fast, with fair-to-great OC potential... not to mention a nice blue and blue LED's to match everything else. :P

Anyway, I'll hopefully order them tomorrow, and I'll try to get an RMA in on that faulty stick of OCZ just so I can have some extra DDR2 around the house, since All I have is DDR.

--EDIT--
Speaking of crap, my desktop just crashed... #-o
Ooooh why, OCZ, why? ](*,)

--EDIT AGAIN--
Actually, after reading OCZ's Warranty Policy, I don't think I'm going to give up on them. Hell yes I'm still buying the new ram, but when it says Equivalent or better product instead of lesser, I like them. I honestly don't know if this is a common thing with memory, but it's the first time I've seen it. :P

G.Skill seems good actually. I chose it for my new rig, but I ended up repairing teh old one first so I can save for a screen.

I've bought a new Logi Driving Force GT off of good ol' eBay. Should hopefully be arriving Tuesday or Wednesday, cost me AU$150. Not bad considering the $250 asking price...
