Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
I visit a site that has a shoutbox chatroom app that ties directly to your user account (so no impersonating) and it is only viewable when logged in. I think this would be great for building a community. I would like to chat with fellow users and not just make assumptions about there personality one post at a time.
Plus if it sits right below "Users logged in" on the forum, it could provide easy access for anyone viewing the boards.
I think this could be very beneficial.
Let me know what you guys think.

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
If you want easy access I guess it wouldn't hurt if bojan added an additional link at the bottom of the board index page for the already existing chat.
But I don't see a point to making another chatroom just because you have something against irc.

Actually, I think a lot of people could get use of the chatbox. With IRC you actually have to go in and stay in, with this you can just discuss as you please while you're logged in.
Either this or you could find a way to embed the IRC room into the forum's footer, which to me is a much better idea...

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
I cant seem to log into the IRC for some reason. After i enter a name, and press submit, it goes blank again.. any help?
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Yeah, Carcrazy is on the right track. I have nothing against IRC, Im just suggesting an idea to make it more available to everyone.
Same here. (One reason why, I dont want to install the IRC software, then just to have to leave it on and running and staying logged in there all the time.)t3ice wrote:I cant seem to log into the IRC for some reason. After i enter a name, and press submit, it goes blank again.. any help?

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
I kinda like this idea.. In fact it'll help a lot, especially ifnone needs a response urgently instead of creating new threads. IRC is way too confusing for me..
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
There's a chat on the main page just like you're asking for.. why not open a new window and run it there?

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Doesn't work for me. I've tried on every browser I have and it wouldn't work.
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Did you try it recently? The old java IRC chat is now replaced with a true inline shoutbox style chat. Separate from IRC.
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
That mini applet is on the main page... We are all on the forum.
It makes sense why its always empty (unless you are a showroom user).

I mean come on. Are you so precious that things have to be just. exactly. like. so. before you'll accept?GT3x24x7 wrote:.. why not open (it in) a new window .. ?

...
Yes.
Lol, I'm just saying, you would get a lot more traffic on there, as it's just MUCH more convenient, especially since most of us more active users just pop in a random points during the day and don't stay long... it doesn't make much sense to go through the trouble just to be on for about 3-5 minutes. It would especially be nicer for newcomers, who may not know it's there... it was a good long time before I found it, and even then I've only used it twice because there's not much point in stopping by just to be leaving again.

Yeah I get it. Just testing your collective resolve.
Given that we already have it on the main page, It might be quite easy to install a similar chat within the forum. This is likely dependent on the limitations of the forum software. Let's see what Teh Bobinat0r has to say..

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Yay, a staff member considers the suggestion.
Just remember that it will have to be 'just. exactly. like. so.' before I'll accept it.

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Suggestions are welcome. Demands are ignored.
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Thats great, because I think it is a great feature on the other forum which uses it and I think it may be an asset here.
Im not demanding anything but I do wish the staffers (who dont even make the last call on website decisions) would be more open to suggestions instead of shutting them down without fully understanding why I made the suggestion in the first place (I did say, maybe you didnt actually read the post, I dont know).
Yes, Chat is already in place, but Im not suggesting chat, Im suggesting the placement of where that chat goes to add convenience and added accesibility. No need to tell me to just settle with IRC in an extra window.

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
First things first. We lowly staffers need to determine whether all of the current provisions along the lines of the suggestion are apparent to the person making the suggestion, and given that to find out any reasons why those provisions are unsuitable. I'm sure you can appreciate that it's not a trivial thing to implement new functionality, therefore it's worth must be determined first.
I am not being (deliberately) difficult, just making sure this is worthwhile pursuing beyond a conceptual stage. In this case, it appears so.
I'd appreciate it if you would think about things from other's point of view before shooting your mouth off.

The chat applet on the main page no longer has anything to do with IRC. You would have found this out if you'd bothered to check rather than making the same type of assumptions you're railing against so vehemently.korge wrote:No need to tell me to just settle with IRC in an extra window.

Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Woops! My bad, my bad.. I totally didn't notice it being there. I used this link, and I can't seem to get connected at all. I realised it was for IRC. Haha!GT3x24x7 wrote:There's a chat on the main page just like you're asking for.. why not open a new window and run it there?
Pardon me while I go clean my eyes.
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
Reread the thread, I got defensive, sorry m8.
Anywho, If it is a somewhat plausible idea, then i cant wait to hear boojans idea on it.

np. Let's see what he says.
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
I guess a popup which launches the chat from the main site could be added to the forum...
Re: Shoutbox Chat (just below the forum)
this is really similar to something I was gonna post on suggestions here accept it could be in the individual Showrooms? But that might not work so well might create to much spam I think but its a idea to go along with this I think. Anyone have any thoughts on this. And I think this Idea would be great for are forum because I always go onto the chat nobody is on or responds so we definetly need a more convient chat rooom/ shout box for users because sadly some of us dont wanna take the time to use chat. Some of use just use the forum or showroom and within a hour or less were offline from here. So good idea
