Buying new PC, need approval

Post by BrontoX »

Ok i am buying a new PC and i need to know if it's good or not.
Here are the specs:
Intel Wolfdale E8200 @2.66GHz
ASUS P5KC
GeIL Ultra 800MHz 2Gb Dual Channel 4-4-4-12
ASUS HD3850 512Mb
Western Digital 250Gb SATA2 16mb Buffer

Is this good? I play games at 1280x1024, i usually play CoD 4, Crysis, NFS:PS, Oblivion, Flight Simulator X, X3 Reunion.

I would go for a 8800GT 256mb or 512mb but is it worth the money?

Tbh, i don't think the 3850 and 8800 GT are a huge difference, imo they both have the same kind of speed but yeh if you have the money go for a " 8800 GT 512MB " since it is more powerful.. For a 3850 make sure you have a 500 PSU since that is recommended : ) but other than that nice specs!, what's you're budget anyway?

600-650Euros and i can buy without the VAT and that system would be 580Euros without VAT and if i put the 8800GT it would be like 610Euros problem is that my parents will need convincing with that. But i really need to know if it's that much better, from what i see on the net it's better than the HD3850 BUT on high resolutions so i need to know on low resolutions.

Well the 8800 GT pwns the 3850 on low but it's up to you which one you want, I'll go for the 8800 GT if you can, if no then the 3850 is good, check out the new 9600 GT, it has the same specs of a nVidia GeForce 8800 GT and same price as the 3850 :P, unless it's this site only :P

Yay! I just found a Gigabyte 8800GT Zalman Cooler 512mb that is almost the same price as the HD3850. Only problem is that someone said that the Gigabytes with Zalman restart and hang, is it true? But from online reviews about the Gigabyte it seems it's ok. Even the Memory is cooler even if the cooler doesn't cover them (some review site tested it) 55C on GPU in full load or something like that and 50-60C on memory not sure about this either.

some advice for you, do NOT be "smart" and save on a PSU
make sure its a good one
so none of these:

if you can get the 8800GT (512), wouldnt be a bad move.. excellent card

Well my dad doesn't want to get a good PSU for the moment, so for like 1-4 weeks it's gonna stay with the 420W PSU that comes with the Cooler Master Case, and i have seen a Rex Power PSU at 500W is it good? if no i am going for the 450W Chieftech (I currently have a 350W Chieftech in my PC and they are quite good)

That's just bloody stupid, the power supply is one thing you just cannot (and I can't stress this enough) be skimpy on, if you have to cut back elsewhere, never on the power supply, you're an idiot otherwise. Spend money on something decent like a Corsair HX-520 or something near it.

Final note:
The HD3850 is eaten alive by the 8800GT, it has no competition there.

Well, keep in mind that the 256 MB 8800 GT is quite a bit less powerful than the 512 MB 8800 GT due to slower clocks. If you could get the 8800 GT 512 MB or HD 3870 for a similar price, I'd obviously go that route. However, these are the current prices in Canada (according to Pricecanada.com)

HD 3850 256 MB - $145
HD 3850 512 MB - $190
HD 3870 512 MB - $200
8800 GT 256 MB - $200
8800 GT 512 MB - $220 ($190 after mail-in rebate)
9600 GT 512 MB - $180

As you can see, the HD 3850 256 MB is priced WELL below any of the other cards and it is quite capable of playing pretty much any game at high/full settings and can handle Crysis at medium-high @ 1280x1024 ...

I found a Gainward Bliss 9600GT 9082 and it's 175 Euros so i'll be going for that one and i'll be putting the clocks up to 700 on core, 1900-2000 on memory and something like 1800 on shaders so basically that rules out any Radeon. Now i hope it stays in stock.

/me flails his own Gainward flag around showing true loyalty

Heh, surprised that you're not just going to try and grab the Golden Sample edition, as it is overclocked standard to 700+ MHz for core and has a better cooling system anyway. Shouldn't cost much more, but is a fair bit better than bogstock 96gt.
