Interview With NFS SHIFT's Ian Bell

Post by Bojan »

AutoSimSport Magazine did an interview with Ian Bell, Slightly Mad Studios founder - the studio behind Need for Speed SHIFT also responsible for well known hardcore sim games GTR2 and GT Legends.
In the interview he explains the history behind Slightly Mad Studios and reveals several interesting facts about sim games and SHIFT:
Until this point, sim equaled hard, and arcade equaled easy on handling. The team felt that this was more a case of the more realistic games not handling properly, as opposed to sims being hard. I drove Forza and Gran Turismo, and real cars don't handle like that. Real cars don't skid at 30MPH and keep skidding at speed. Tyres, when properly interacting with asphalt grip/slip/slide/slip/regrip and so forth, and with driver input, are very controllable, this goes especially for race cars with slicks. Not only have sim games not been compensating for the lack of g forces etc but they've been making the cars spin out too easily.
He promises SHIFT is generation ahead in the physics area and will deliver a pick-up-and play experience with 3 modes: novice for beginners, default for the masses (who enjoy PGR and GT5) and pro for the hardcore gamers.

Where did you get Ferrari? There's nothing about Shift having a Ferrari or the Lamborghini R-GT in it. This is how rumors get started.

This info and teaser makes me hope for a good game, but since this is NFS I dunno what to think. It might be good.... or it might suck... I'm confused...

Whoa, I got really excited for a sec... :(

Read the article, TRANSFORMER. It's clear they're talking about a different game. That screen shot looks extremely similar to the SHIFT screen shots, though. I'd like to know more about this "Ferrari Project"...

I almost jizzed in my pants when I saw that. Then I realized it's not NFS: Shift. Now, I'm more curious about this Ferrari Project more than Shift!

Wow, I just noticed that too. Even though it's obvious it's a different game, it's crazy how similar the Ferrari Project looks to Shift. It's even wierder how finished it looks. Hopefully Slightly Mad will be able to find a published for that game, because it looks awesome.

Thing what confuses me, if that they say handling is going to be like 'PGR' and as far as i know PGR is not a simulation. Its more on the visual side (Arcade) So they sorta stuffed up on that.

Well at least we're gonna get to try it on the PC platform. PGR was never released for PC. :)

They say handling will be like PGR and GT5. PGR = arcade, GT5 = sim. So I guess Shift will be somewhere in between...

I don't think he meant the handling will be similar to PGR and GT5. Bell even mentions how he didn't think the handling in either of those games are realistic... He said the default difficulty setting would be a comfortable setting for those who've played PGR/GT5. But the physics/feel of the game won't feel anything like those games.

That Ferrari Project is something like BMW M3 Challenge.

Why does that Ferrari Project screenshot look awfully similar to Ferrari Challenge?

Anyway, Ian Bell really describes SHIFT as a true hardcore sim. I'm keeping my hopes up. And I'll also be looking forward to this Ferrari thing...
