My Need for Speed for 2013/2014

Post by Ruud007 »

I feel - actually I know - the NFS series have been dealing with inconsistency over the last couple of years. A lot of the fans are screaming out for a remake or sequel to Underground, a mix of Most Wanted and Underground and some fans like to see the continuation of ProStreet/Shift. I've been thinking what I'd like to see for NFS in the future and I have come up with something I think has some basic elements I believe should be featured in a NFS game.

The title I'd give to this game is either NFS: The Roof or NFS: From Zürich with Love. I'm still hesitant. Basically, the story takes place in and about Zürich. I'd love to see the story take place there because I know it would be just beautiful to race there. The story is about you. You start as a small racer who works for an international operating smuggling orginazation (yes, I'm aware this has been seen before, but this will be different) and per race you get money and the better you race, the more respect you will earn. You will work your way up by racing as well as you can. In between the story continues and here's something that has never been featured in a NFS game before: right from the start you can choose between four cars. The story will continue on which car you have chosen, so that means there are already four different career plot lines. Then in the game itself, there are between 10 and 15 moments where it depends on how well you are respected which way your career will develop. Do you race worse while you have been promoted? You might get it more difficult than when you would have raced fantastically. And you will get different cut-scenes.

The cut-scenes (this will mean it's almost impossible to have exactly the same cut-scenes every time you play career mode) have to be shot smoothly and feature good (looking) actors. Since I'm entitled with the opinion a story should only be featured in a (race) game when it's a good one, career mode will take you at least 25 up to 40 hours of playing. It's necessary you believe the story of being a smuggler and why you make progress.

For me, the tone and the style of a game are very important. The game, obviously, has to look magnificent and bright colors should be used. I'm aiming at the way Hot Pursuit (2010) looks in terms of style. Weather effects include: sunny and bright, cloudy, wet roads (just as in Hot Pursuit 2010) and slippy/snowy roads. No real rain or snow will be featured, because it's only distracting and the cars only handle differently when the ROADS are wet or slippy. Besides, a day and night cyclus will be avaible, just as a time balk and a speedometer that was first featured in Hot Pursuit.

There are not many loading screens in the game and when there are loading screen, tips and tricks should be seen as well as beautiful images of Zürich and its surroundings (similar to Hot Pursuit 2010). When you're selecting a car, that also should go smoothly just as in Hot Pursuit 2010.

As far as the gameplay goes, it should be a mix between Most Wanted (2005, I haven't played the 2012 version yet) and Hot Pursuit (2010). Beautiful crashes should be seen when you take down other vehicles or police cars during races. It will be an arcade game. The AI in this game won't have any benifits. I always get so irritated when the AI is never more than 5 seconds away from you. The AI is quite difficult from the beginning, so that you are encouraged to drive as well you can. Then they will drive better as the game progresses (from the point of view you will be getting better as well). You could see they behave the same as normal players like you and me do.

Also important to me is the presence of normal vehicles in the game. To me, it's obvious they should be real cars (just as in Hot Pursuit 2010) and in Zürich itself there should be more cars than outside Zürich, in the mountains for instance. They also have to look perfectly and have the same damaging model as the car you're driving has. (Again similar to Hot Pursuit 2010)

The game will feature three camera options: a camera option behind the car, an option when you're in the car (cockpit view) and the option I call ,,without the car'' (you know what I mean). Of course, the cockpit view should be detailed and realistic.

You can select races from your Zürich map. You can do every race again and again and you will get the same amount of money. The more you race, the more respect you will get and with more money you can buy extra cars.

Free-roam: yes! It will be featured in this game. But differently. It's worth just driving in and around Zürich, because you will encounter racers that will challenge you. Once you accept AND win this ,,extra'' race, it will also be featured on your map and from then you can select that race any time you want, you just have to do it once.

Police: yes! It will also be featured in this game. Both in free roam and during races. It's not like in Most Wanted the chance of encountering police is minimum or maximum. No, in this game it depends on which car you're driving and which heat level that car has. Technically, the police can appear in every race. This, to me, makes it more exciting because you never know whether the police will show up or not. I also designed a ,,car list'' for the police.

There are five levels of police:
Level 1: chased by Opel Astras
Level 2: chased by Volkswagen Golfs - they can also request road blocks -
Level 3: chased by Audi A3s - they can both request road blocks and drop spike strips -
Level 4: chased by BMW 5-series AND BMW X5 as SUVs - they can do the previous things and request road blocks with spike strips -
Level 5: chased by Porsche 911s AND BMW X5 as SUVs - they can do the previous things and request a helicopter -

As you can see, the police cars are European, since the game features Zürich and its surroundings as the location. Police cars won't have nitro.

There will be different types of races featured in the game.
Circuit (standard)
Sprint (standard)
Knock-out (racing against 3 other racers, after each lap the drive in last place loses)
Downtown Battle - you will race against three other racers in downtown Zürich. That means there are more cars and racing is more difficult due to narrow streets etc.
Downtown Duel - same as the Battle, only difference is that you're driving against one other, more difficult driver.
Highway Run - fast ride on the highway with also more cars.
Checkpoint Zürich - racing on your own and you have to beat a certain time to win.

The Downtown Battles and Duels will take place in Zürich, the Highway Run on the highways outside Zürich, the Checkpoint races both in and about Zürich and the other three types or races will take place in the environment of Zürich but not in Zürich itself.

Tuning: no! Tuning won't be featured in this game, you can only choose the color of your car (which will be the real normal colors that are used on the specific cars). Let me tell you why there is no tuning in this game. First, I wanna capture more of the style and tone of the earlier games AND it's important in this game not to stand out as a racer. Since you're a smuggler, you don't want to be noticed all the time. That makes sense, right?

And then THE OFFICIAL CAR LIST, yeah :D. I just wrote down the more basic versions of the cars because I don't know all the different models on specific cars. That's something EA would find out :P

01 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
02 Alfa Romeo MiTo

56 Volkswagen Scirocco

At the end of the FIRST time you complete your career mode, you will get four extra bonus cars that from that moment on can be used in further times you play the career mode and online. I won't say which cars that will be, because there would be no fun to give that away already.

As far as the car list goes, I wanted to have the hottest and coolest modern cars availbe (I'm realistic, I looked which cars NFS has licenses for) as well as some SUVs AND some classic, beautiful cars. Some of them have appeared in James Bond films, since I'm a huge Bond fan and that's something I couldn't have left out :D. Since you can't tune your car, the cars will be stock and drive the way you expect it (still arcade feeling!). This is similar to Hot Pursuit 2010.

NFS never stops at career mode. In this game, a new updated version of Autolog will be featured, making it fun to compete with friends and online players. There will be an online modus and offline multiplayer: split screen makes its comeback. The game will be available for PC, WiiU, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 (I don't know if Microsoft and Sony have a new console by then), PSP Vita, 3DS and a different version for iPhone.

I also thought about THE final race/mission you have to do, at which location that should happen, but I'm not giving that away (yet), that would be a pity.

The Roof (if that were the title of the game) stands for being at the top of your career at the end. Metaphorically, you're standing at the roof, you can't go any higher. If From Zürich with Love were the title, it would just be a damn good title and a beautiful reference to - again! - the James Bond series. Just a ,,joke''.

i like your ideas...
Zurich...? 8) ... a very nice place for an NFS indeed ( it actually reminds me of one of the top gear episodes about the best driving road in the world)

regarding the tuning and not wanting to stand out as a smuggler... i think you stand out way more in a stock carrera gt than a tricked out 911... its swiss... not my home town somewhere in middle east.

i think tuning should be in but not ANYTHING like underground... underground tuning was like a porno movie with the cars being the actors. in my opinion, tuning should be just like what NFS:PU did... clean, professional and with realistic factory provided upgrades. visual tweaks should be limited to a few number of preset bodykits (no separate change of hoods, exhausts, roofs, doors or even rims..)... neons?... WTF.

your car list is pretty good and can be better with the addition of following:
Porsche 911 Carrera S (991)
Porsche 911 GT3 (991)
Porsche 918 spyder (the real one... the 2013 model... not the current one that criterion pulled out of the history books)
Porsche 918 RSR ( can be one of your special rewards)
Lamborghini Aventador
Pagani huayra
Noble M600

and some more

Zürich is indeed a nice place, isn't it ;-). I see myself cruising there already haha once I have my driver license. I've been to Bern once and I've been riding through Switserland a lot over the years because of the holidays. I've never been to Zürich, yet I know how Bern impressed me and I know Zürich will as well.

I get your point about the ,,not wanting to stand out as a smuggler'' thing. I therefore replaced the Carrera GT (wasn't one of my favorite cars anyway, but I just thought let's put it in because it has been featured in so many NFS) for your opted 911 Carrera S (991) and the Ford GT (same story as Carrera) for the classic Ford Capri, which makes the total of classic cars 10. Tuning point I can also come in, but unfortunately I've never been able to play NFS: PU so I don't about the tuning in that game but regarding your comment I'd consider it as an option because it would be featuring tuning but not so overwhelming as in Underground, Carbon etcetera.

I'd also price the game €34,99 (about 46 dollars) and if you pre-ordered it, a new video card that supports the game perfectly would also be sent with the game. Just a gift that makes pre-ordering worth it. I'd also make sure there would be the least patches as possible and no DLC available. And if DLC were to be available, it would be for free.

would not be an nfs without a porsche gt, would it? (carrera gt is my most favorite car of all time btw)

your price is reasonable but a video card?
EA + "new vid card with preorder+ = "in your dreams"

free DLC is nice... for any game.

Ghehe oops! I'm reading it again now and I meant some kind of update for your video card, not a hole new video card. That'd be cool though, but indeed only in your dreams.

Nice, but without Plymouth, Buick, Ferrari, Mercury, Peugeot, Lotus, Pontiac, Toyota, Lamborghini Countach, Dodge Charger and Porsche 959? Without tuning? I can't even tune a gear ratios or tire pressure? And with Asphalt-like takedown camera? I think you need to work more on your project.
In game 911 Classic is a 901 or 930? Coupe or Targa? Please, tell me correct model name.

I haven't thought about this idea for pretty much a year now. I do feel different about certain things now when I read the first draft I posted.

About tuning:
I agree that tuning should be implemented, but only tuning that improves the performance of a car. It would indeed be nice to see realistic performance kits that are used by the auto brands.

About the camera:
I think the cockpit view mode in Shift was one of the better things of that game. It looked great and it gave a more depth feeling to the racing itself. This should be featured in my game, together with the camera view behind the car. I feel those two camera options are enough to satisfy any Need for Speed player. Cockpit view may give you more of the Speed feeling, whilst the other camera view gives more control and overview.

About the cars:
Originally I had 56 cars with 4 bonus cars that could be unlocked. I would add the following cars to the official list (adding up to 77 cars including the bonus cars):
57. Alfa Romeo 4C
58. Alfa Romeo C-SUV (expected in 2014)
59. Audi (R)S4
60. Ford Fiesta
61. Lamborghini Réventon
62. Lamborghini Aventador
63. Nissan Skyline GT-R
64. Lotus Elise
65. Citroën DS4
66. Peugeot 205 Turbo (classic)
67. Peugeot 208
68. Opel Astra (Vauxhall in the US)
69. 2012 SEAT Léon
70. Renault Mégane
70. Lexus LFA
71. 2012 Fiat Punto
72. Ferrari 458 Italia
73. Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

The classic Porsche 911 is a 1972 911 T Targa :).

About the handling:
The handling should be realistic for the car given, but it must be easy to pick up and it must be arcade style. Hot Pursuit 2010 comes close, but a little fine tuning on the handling of that game would be the outcome for this game.

About the weather effects:
Races can also take place in foggy weather.

Title: Need for Speed: From Zürich with Love
Platforms: PC, PS4, XboxOne, Wii U: no differences regarding the game itself between the platforms. On each platform the game must look equally beautiful.
