Recently renamed developer Ghost Games and racing fellow racing fanatics at Criterion Games have banded together for Need for Speed Rivals: a new game that represents the franchise's first drift into the next-gen console world (which is not to be confused with the 2005 handheld spinoff).

Powered by Frostbite 3, Rivals aims to utilize the power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to give players "the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer" when it releases "later this year."

Need for Speed Rivals transports players to the fictitious Redview County, an open-world environment where players can take on the role as either street racer or police officer. Like Most Wanted before it, racers aim to become the most infamous person behind the wheel, while cops attempt to work together to drive the area's high-risk inhabitants off the road. Players can personalize the experience with custom license plates, paint, liveries decals and rims, and performance upgrades.

Current-generation consoles will also join the rivalry – powered by its own version of Frostbite 3 – on November 19. Though it was not mentioned in the press release announcing Need for Speed Rivals, Ghost Games executive producer Marcus Nilsson confirmed to Joystiq a PC version is also in the works. No release date for that version was revealed. Beyond ushering in another installment of the racing series, Ghost and Criterion's mission is to put Frostbite 3's next-gen ability on center stage – an engine not built from the ground up, but an enhanced iteration of DICE's previous platform.

"What's really great with the Frostbite 3 framework is that it's really scalable," Nilsson said of the engine's ability to perform on current-generation consoles. "Battlefield 3 was built on Frostbite 2, but with really high capabilities. Going to Frostbite 3, it's not like it's a brand new engine. We've been developing that engine," Nilsson adds. Noting how EA's latest internal engine of choice has become an iterative component throughout development, Nilsson added his team has "had an engine from day one to start building upon."

Utilizing an evolved engine is "very essential to having to build the high-quality games that people see," Nilsson said, because "it takes less time to use this engine, for instance, than it took to use Frostbite 1 or Frostbite 2."

When Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in 2005, EA was one of its biggest supporters, offering a slew of games at and around launch. Familiar titles made the 'next-gen' jump, including Madden and FIFA – two franchises promised for the impending Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era. EA's 2005 launch offerings, however, were woefully lacking in features and instead focused on graphical fidelity. Will Rivals – across current- and next-gen platforms – offer the same, fully-featured experience?

"The simple answer to that question is no," Nilsson said. Though he wouldn't specify any content potentially removed from next-gen versions, the former DICE executive producer noted "the next-gen consoles will have different capabilities and in some aspects, a different feature-set." Other than the enhanced graphical fidelity – including new weather effects – and an increase in online player counts on next-gen platforms, no specific differences in content were revealed. Nilsson did confirm, however, that the size of the world will be the same across all platforms.

The major difference between the current- and next-gen versions of Rivals, according to Nilsson, is one of developer philosophy. "It's a mindset of how you think about how people will play these games. To me, visuals are great – absolutely – but unless you can use that power to play that game differently, then we failed." To ensure success under this philosophy, Ghost and Criterion are "pushing" a feature called AllDrive, which allows friends to enter and exit each other's worlds seamlessly and "on-the-fly."

"AllDrive is fundamentally a way for us to destroy the line between playing alone and playing with friends. Destroying the line between single-player and multiplayer," Nilsson said, before offering a use case scenario for the system. "Imagine you're playing Rivals, you're driving your car as a cop chasing someone. You're going through your progression, collecting points and then I join and we're friends, so we'll be put in the same world." Though the world is "pretty big" and each player can complete single-player tasks, they exist within the same environment and the "two experiences can merge."

If each player enters separate pursuits at different points in the world and eventually come across each other on the same road, Rivals transitions into a co-op state. "The game recognizes that now we're playing together and changes the scoring and changes the objectives for you, to acknowledge that you're now playing co-op," Nilsson adds. Depending on the amount of people you encounter or chose to play with, the game will adjust by providing new variations to play the game. "That to me is really a new mindset and where I think we wouldn't have gone to unless we started thinking along the lines of the next-generation."

Autolog's information overload approach from Most Wanted will change in Need for Speed Rivals

AllDrive, however, is not exclusive to Xbox One and PS4. "AllDrive will feature on current-gen and next-gen but there will be differences," Nilsson added, explaining the next-gen's ability to include more online players and "some ways of interacting with that game from different devices." The producer further clarified – citing the Xbox One's second-screen SmartGlass app – the team's intention to build players "different ways to interact with the game instead of just sitting in front of a TV."

Nilsson said he could not go into greater detail and could not tell us what side of the fence the game's PC version will fall on.

Criterion's social tracking system Autolog returns for Rivals, though Nilsson revealed the teams have decided to "move it back a notch," saying it was maybe taken "a little too far" by comparing too many elements in Need for Speed Most Wanted. "There's also great possibilities through Autolog to build something far bigger than what we've seen [in Most Wanted and NFS: Hot Pursuit]," the executive producer teased.

We anticipate seeing more revolving around the world of Need for Speed Rivals at E3 2013, next month.

Also, does design packages mean bumpers and stuff? hhmmmm...
And Ferraris, its incredibly AMAZING! :D
Hopefully they don't will leave to many bugs in the game.

well... i was expecting a more sim like title...

nothing is known right now about the racing and customization structure... but knowing that criterion has a part in this, i can speculate that visual customization is out of the window... performance customization is very (very) minor...and the only thing that GG is insisting on is how they destroyed the line between single and multi player experience.... so i guess we'll have another facebook app with cars as avatars.... no emphasize on the racing itself... it's all about friends, speedwalls and ...

Guys read this interview with ghost games.

"Rivals is absolutely an open world game.""

The open world was just one of the successful elements from previous entries in the series that Ghost Games decided to renew. The studio also looked to franchise entries like the Underground series for cues on aesthetic vehicle customizations, which will play a much larger role in Rivals than it has in recent games. Performance upgrades, paint jobs, decals, rims and license plates can be modified to showcase player personality. It's designed to let the player take ownership of their ride, an especially important trait given racers' inherent interconnectivity.

"In this game, where we have AllDrive, you'll be in the same world as other people," Nilsson said. "We think it's a really natural drive to express who you are through your car."

Ghost Games also hopes to refine the Cops vs. Racers aspect of the Hot Pursuit series by fundamentally separating how the two halves are played, Nilsson explained. Their cars handle differently, the rewards they earn are different, they manner in which they earn Speedpoints — Rivals' all-important currency — are different, as are their progression systems.

thanks for the link phantom... but that quote down there scares me the most.

The first thing Nilsson did, he said, was collaborate with Criterion creative director Craig Sullivan, who was working on shipping last year's Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Ghost Games started recruiting former employees of racing game developers like Turn 10, Rockstar, Bizarre, Playground and even Criterion. They worked tirelessly on getting the feel of racing just right, and then turned to what ended up being the biggest focus for Rivals during its development: A seamless multiplayer formula called AllDrive.
"AllDrive is fundamentally a way for us to destroy the line between single-player and multiplayer," Nilsson said.

looks like they have just built a game, only to present AllDrive.

cant wait :D for it
EA has announced Need for Speed Rivals, saying that the next entry in the long-running racing series will launch for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 19.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are in development, but are not yet dated.

Need for Speed Rivals is being developed by the new, Gothenberg-based studio Ghost Games. The game will use DICE's Frostbite 3 engine, EA says.

The game blends elements of Criterion Games' Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, offering up a large open world--dubbed Redview County--and allowing players to take the role of a racer or a police officer. Cars are reported to be customisable, and Ghost Games claims the game will seamlessly integrate both its single-player and multiplayer gameplay with a feature called AllDrive, which lets players drop in and out of each others' worlds.

The series' social tracking service Autolog will also return.

Need for Speed's almost 20-year history has seen multiple developers handle the game, and the series has seen both ups and downs. Black Box's Need for Speed: The Run, which was devleoped using the Frostbite 2 engine, was panned upon its release in 2011. Criterion Games' 2012 Need for Speed: Most Wanted and 2010 Hot Pursuit were both well received, however, and their creative director, Craig Sullivan, has joined the team at Ghost Games to oversee development of Rivals.

This game is underground(customization and stuff) hot pursuit (cops vs. racers) and most wanted (open world chases ,jumps, collectibles ect..) all combined into one on top of that they brought back ferrari!, but i haven't heard anything about a Lamborghini yet , only ageras and Ferrari,Porsches and martins...my take on this since ea has secured a nice partnership with Microsoft , they were like yeah you can use Ferrari on need for speed now.

First thoughts: superb graphics and Ferrari is finally back. But I think this game will be similar to Hot Pursuit 2010 or The Run. Also, Asphalt-like violet exhaust flame confuses me. Real exhaust flame is showed below.

I'll wait until release. As a guy who stuck in the past century forever, I probably would not buy or download this game for some reasons again.

I'm not greedy. If I were really greedy I would charge anybody for looking at me or talking with me.
I just can't stand Asphalt or Burnout features in new NFS games. All these things like drift assist (or whatever it's name is, just watch the videos on YouTube), light-blue/violet exhaust flame, takedown cameras, "turbo" boost and billboard jumps are weird and don't fit in game with NFS title.

I have read a couple of articles on the game, so far it sounds really promising. I like the AllDrive idea they came up with. I hope at E3 2013 they will show us more? The graphics in the screenshots look amazing!

Is there going to be full car customization in the game? I've only read about paint job, rims customization.

Are you aware that the rainbow exhaust its a DLC ? and you don't have to get it, second it starts with rainbow exhaust and then you move up the car aesthetics and even performance...Most Wanted remake had everything a need for speed had, the cars, the pursuits and the sense of speed..however most of the elements that made up the burnout series were there and the game felt bland and dull.hot pursuit 2010 was the only game that was close to the classic need for speed roots..even tho it had the drift-oriented handling..the game lived up to the classics, the only thing missing were ferrari's and jumps and thrills based on the environment not the action of the cars and some of the new elements like gadgets provided a fun, fast exhilarating multiplayer experience ..now we have the best and probably the worst of need for speed combined into one game with the return of Ferrari to the series ..this game main focus its online open-world chases/pursuits..count me in cause i was waiting for that..however some of the elements from criterion will return therefore ..EA its gonna highlight the features that make money like autolog (again) and their secret weapon ,micro-transactions in order to to make some profits..so that worries me.
