As I recall, Top Fuellers were being pegged at 5/6 sec 1320 times. I also include Jet funny cars in this category. Sub 4s seems a bit hyperbolic.

Seems like the fastest official time is 4.437 seconds, but of course that's the fastest and not the median.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is a very nice car, running a 16 cylinder (W16), quad-turbocharged engine (hence it's name) at a very nice 736kW @ 6000rpm (1001 bhp @ 6000 rpm)

It's an incredible car, and it's impressive what they did. I just couldn't see myself buying one, ever.

Still, with 16 cylinders, that engine must be freakishly smooth.

And don't forget that the engine actually makes about 3000hp (or so I've heard). 1000 is lost to the cooling system, and another 1000 is lost in through the transmission and other things . . .

Actually that was one of the main reasons that the Veyron was so badly delayed for production (from late 2005). Originally this design was never meant to break the 400km barrier but former VW boss (can't remember or spell the name) liked the shape so much, he didn't want it changed. Hence engineers had to extensivly remodify the car so it wouldn't disintergrate around the driver when going 250mph+
