Need for Speed Returning to Roots

Post by Bojan »

We have recently reported that the next Need for Speed game in the making will be developed by Criterion Software, the studio behind the Burnout series. There have been rumours that it will be a return to the roots, but with mixed information coming from EA on what the NFS roots could be we weren't completely sure on what direction the game will be heading.
From a recent tweet from a Criterion developer it seems that the roots means the first Need for Speed game that premiered on 3DO in 1994.
"Red lining it all the way and making it pay" - a return to the original 3DO version of The Need for Speed.
If you want to know more about the original Need for Speed, we have a lengthy article on the game available in our wiki.

OMG did someone finally read my mind? I can't believe they'll go to the very roots of NFS ( not NFS UG or MW but NFS 1,2 & 3)
I can't wait to see what will they make out of this. I can imagine a forest track with a house of wood and myself in a Ferrari tearing apart the competition (memories).
I expect this NFS to be the best in last 10 years of NFS gaming.

I wouldn't get all excited about this. Sorry guys, but we never know what EA means with "we're going back to the NFS roots". What roots? Pre Underground? Pre Most Wanted? Pre High Stakes?

I would gladly see a NFS coming back to its true root, which is the first game. Even though I only started playing NFS games in 2000 with Porsche Unleashed, I remember playing Hot Pursuit II and I loved racing with Ferraris and Lamborghinis on those tracks. So a NFS with that in mind again would be great. No tuning, no city to explore, just great single tracks in various scenarios, supercars and well, some cops to give it some fun. :)

PS: The Wiki here never works for me. I always get a blank page with this message: "Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/nfsweb/public_html/wiki/htdocs/includes/User.php on line 676"

**** yes.

Surely Criterion can produce a racing game that will feel more like a NFS game for sure. No more garbage software in a Black Box for me. :D

I have faith in Criterion and after making excellent Burnout games one after another, I know they can deliver. Hopefully EA will not keep a short leash on them. Either way, can't wait until more information surfaces.

the one i loved was High Stakes...

it was Hot Pursuit, but more! in the GOOD direction!

Day and Night, Weather, closed tracks, nice scenery, pretty good pursuit mechanics, with HOT PURSUIT available! as well as ALL hot pursuit tracks!!

only exotics! NO MODS!*i'm WAY TOO tired of EA and their ugly idea of "body kits"...*

and of course... amazing graphics in today's standards... if they come out one in 480x320... i'll lol so hard...
