NFS-HS. Can't play the game in Win XP SP2

Hi. I downloaded a copy of the NFS High Stakes, but firstly it can't run on my machine, it says "Not a valid Win32 application" when i click on the file nfshs.exe

Is there a way to make it work in XP SP2 without the CD (as I evidently don't have).

If the mods allow me, i could post the links i used to download the game.

Hope someone help me as I'm new here.
