ATI pack more power for less in the higher end market. Nvidia for low end though... 9600GT is a smart low-mid end choice and can be had for under 150... HD4870s are brilliant. Would I buy one? No... I decided on a GTX 260 for $30 less... offers very similar performance, more overclockable anyway and runs cooler and doesn't have high-heat issues. I'm reluctant to get one without an aftermarket cooler, but that will drive the price up. Without it, reliability is a concern. Nvidia's worked fine for me.
Both companies have their pros and cons.
