You can never have too many reference pics, and blueprints are insanely useful, as well. For that model, I used a top view blueprint because of it's unique shape, but for most other cars, a side view blueprint would probably be a better idea. You can find blueprints for pretty much any car you're looking for here.

And it's done. 8) Took about 3 hours to render these.

lol... good work, except the texture on the floor looks really bady quality, maybe increase the tile value?

nice one Haz =) somehow i still have little light-issues with rendering, but i made some last night... it's not exactly superb, but i enjoyed making it =)

Now the last one will be a combination of round stones and the tulipshape... dunno how i will make that, either 'spiral' form like now or a straight line =)

Looks pretty complicated. :o But I wouldn't know since I have no idea how to model in 3DS.

I just used a random texture so it wouldn't be rendered on a black background.

Okie dokie, which carbon fibre pattern do you think looks the best? I tried using bump maps, but I don't think it turned out too well. I also noticed that on some carbon fibre hoods I've seen, at the right angle, it reflects an almost golden colour, and I tried to replicate that in the first two examples.

I also need some suggestions for color schemes.

I think you need a better carbon-fibre texture. The reflections and colour and all are looking good, but the texture itself is really letting it down.

It should be more like this

rather than a simple checker pattern.

And with the colour schemes, I reckon red/black is the go :D Ferrari!!1!

It's not a just a checkered pattern, but you can't really see it too well in those screenies. I think the material's blurred a bit by default, I'll see if I can fix that. I'm at school right now, and I have the pattern I used on a flash disk, which I'll upload later in my TA period.

Hmm . . . I can see now it's not a simple checker pattern, but it still doesn't look like carbon fibre :| imo

Having examined the carbon fibre top on my laptop, you're gonna need more than an actual texture to do the job.

I think what you might need is a combination of two or more materials. I suggest a glossy reflective (to simulate the reflectiong of the orange/green coloured surface) underneath and a checkered mask on top of it. The mask would only allow the glossy reflection to shine through either the white or black blockes on the checkered pattern. You may also need an overal light reflective materail on top of the whole thing.

I think I applied mesh smooth a few too many times.

I'm experimenting with materials and textures for the carbon fibre right now, I'll get a pic up when I can. That dark glossy red looks awesome! I keep looking at it and wanting to take a bite out of it because it looks like a candy apple.

-EDIT-
Okay, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get 3 materials combined (light glossy over mask over glossy CF texture, as Ibi suggested) into a single material. I tried using a compound material and adding the 3 materials in order, but the final result is just the original material before I made it a compound material.

I use SketchUp for all my modeling, and 3DS Viz for rendering, but there are free renderers out there, as well. I don't use them, however, since I have 3DS Viz installed, wouldn't want it to go to waste. :)

So, Ibi, can you help me with my materials problem? :(

I'm just mucking around with 3ds now to create a CF material. I'll report back my findings. :)

Research and a good understanding of how CF is in real life - then you attempt to recreate it those real world paremeters in the software.

Here are four versions of a CF material.

Image

The bottom two are pretty simple in that they are just textures on a reflective surface. The top two materials are also the same as the bottom ones, however they have a varnish material underneath. Also if you take a close look at the top two materials, the CF pattern almost dissappears around the edges of sphere, not too sure if it's like that in real life, but ads a nice touch to it I thought.

I think the bottom left looks the best, even if it is just a simple texture. It's very similar to the texture I'm currently using. I'm rendering a fairly large image right now (1280x1024) and it will probably be done in about 15 minutes - I'll upload it then.

-EDIT-
I think the carbon fibre turned out pretty well. The wings near the rear of the car look like a matte material, probably because it's only reflecting white, but it's the same glossy material as the front wing.
