Also depends which version of the game you are getting. General consensus seems to be:

North American Version - Honda Civic or Peugeot 206 or Toyota Corolla AE86

European Version - Peugeot 106 or Vauxhall/Opel Corsa or Toyota Corolla AE86

I picked the 106 cause I liked it.
The fastest is the 240sx though

(European version, I dont know the American version)

If the civic was in our version, i would choose it first, cause it was the first car I owned in Underground 1. It whooped everyone, until I traded it in for a skyline.

It's funny, but I found the Civic was only competitive until about a 3rd of the way into the game in NFSU1. I always prefered the Hyundai Coupe V6 (or Tiburon as it is known in other parts of the world) for completing the game with.

Or the Integra Type R (oh how I wish it hadn't been removed from U2 - and I don't mean the fantastic Irish rock group, either! I mean NFSU2 of course.)

i always start with the civic, im not sure if its the best car but its been a tradition since i first played nfsu1, plus it seems to drive well, but that could be just me since im used to it.
