Fiberglassing

Post by Tunerfreak »

Ive been thinking about having a go at fiberglassing, like maybe a little front lip for my car. Tell me if im right of wrong but from what I have seen I need to make the initial shape out of MDF or Foam and then Fiberglass over it about 7-9 layers? Ive got a few tutorials to follow. Is fiberglass very expensive?

Has anyone got any experience or comments on this?

Fibreglassing isn't very expensive, but layer moulding, getting even disribution and setting correct shapes is rather difficult. It's best left to the professionals, or for car repairs because when combined with filler a good, smooth finish suitable for painting is easier to achieve.

Yeah, but its hideously expensive for good quality CF parts and they're a nightmare to fit. It cost me £700 for my CF interior kit and took me a week to get the glue to bond with the carbon weave.

Whatever you do, just make sure you wear gloves, for the love of God. Fiberglass is stupid sharp, and you can get it in your skin without knowing.

IMO, fibreglass is worthless for the most part. Most bodyshops nowadays wont touch the stuff, and instead go with Polyurethane plastics, as theyre much cheaper, and more flexible to work with. By all means have a go, bits a dieing art Im afraid.
