A guide to hex editing in Need for Speed Most Wanted

[b][TUTORIAL] Hex-Editor[/b]

Some changes in NFSMW can only be made with a Hex-Editor, since there is until now no Toll for it, and there may never will. This should be a beginning in the world of game “hexing” for you. Have fun!

[i]Important! Before you do any change to the save-game, make a back-up.[/i]


[b]0. Tools that you need.[/b]

• Hex-Editor
• Save-Editor

It is not important which hex editor you use. Use the one you like or the one you already installed have. Hex-Workshop seems to be a good editor.

The save editor is for example with ShopSpezial. You can download it from here: [url=http://rapidshare.de/files/12233920/SaveEditor.rar.html]Download[/url]
The save editor is needed to fix the save file checksum.


[b]1. About Hex-Editor[/b]

Here are some base knowledge’s about hex editors. Most hex editors are in 3 parts separated (colored in the picture below):

Green block: Here is the data displayed as you would see it in a text editor, (Notepad for example). When this data is not a word is, you will see only strange signs. One of than signs is a “Byte” A bite is constituted by 8 bits and it can be 1 of 256 different signs (28 = 256).

Yellow block: this is the actual „Hex“- data. You see the same content of the green block, but here it is displayed with two hexadecimal numbers. Hex numbers go from 0-F (so 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F – these are 16 values). A number like this can be constructed with 4 bits (24 = 16), therefore, 2 hex numbers can construct a byte.

Red block: Here are the „addresses“, also called offsets. The addresses are also in hex. They represent the position where the data of the displayed data begins.
The „G“ of GAME is the 47 in hex format, and it is in the 00000044 address. (The row begins in 00000040)

When you look with the hex editor for a specific value, you can jump with the F3 key to the next result.


[b]2. Structure of the save file[/b]

The save file has 3 blocks which are interesting to change with the hex editor, but it has more parts.

[b]2.1 Car Slots[/b]

Here are the Car Codes with the pointer to the corresponding Tuning Slot and Career Slot. A whole entry is 20 Bytes (14 hex) long. There are 200 Car Slots.
The first 31 entries are for the Bonus Cars, the following 50 are for the stock/special cars, and the cars of the player begin at the 00006219 address. That can also be calculated:
For that you can use the Windows Calculator. You will have to switch it to cientifical, and click on the HEX button. The firs address of the car slots is 00005BC5. Add to that 81 (51 hex) 20 bytes long slots (14 hex), and you will get 00006219 (00005BC5 + 51*14 = 00006219).

The first entry of the players cars looks for me like this (this is a Golf in the career):

51000000 534B0579 534B0579 02000F00 1F00CDCD

The 51000000 is the car slot number, and it is (up to the bonus cars) a consecutive number)
534B0579 534B0579 is the actual Car Code, and it determines which car model it is.
The 02 determines to which category the car belongs. (01 = Stock, 02 = Career, 04 = My cars, 08 = Bonus cars, 42 = Cars you won).
1F is the number of the corresponding Tuning Slot (it is FF (none) in stock cars.
00 is the number of the corresponding Career Slot (FF if it is not a career car).

[b]2.2 Tuning Slots[/b]

In Tuning Slots are the parts that keep the parts/performance/visual tuning, as well as the adjustments of performance tuning. A whole entry is 408 bytes long (198 hex). It has 75 Tuning Slots altogether.
The first 31 Tuning Slots are already occupied by the Bonus Cars. The first user Tuning Slot has the number „1F“, and it begins by the address 00009CCD. You can calculate this as well.
To the first tuning slot address 00006B65 we add 1F times 408 (198 hex) bytes, and we get 00009CCD (00006B65 + 1F*198 = 00009CCD).
Tip: As you can see in the picture, each Tuning Slot finishes with XXCDCDCD, where XX is the slot number. CDCDCD can be considered as a „separator“.

The slot for my Golf looks like this:

• Dark Blue marks the whole Slot, where the slot number for each is kept at the end of the slot (Here: 1F)
• Pink is for the Roof Scoop (Byte 124/125 (hex 7C/7D)).
• Red is for the Hood (Byte 126/127 (hex 7E/7F)).
• Orange are the Rims (Byte 132/133 (hex 84/85)).
• Yellow the Paint (Byte 152/153 (hex 98/99)).
• Light Green the Vinyl (Byte 154/155 (hex 9A/9B)).
• Dark Green the Rim Color (Byte 156/157 (hex 9C/9D)).
• Light Blue is the part (Byte 280-311 (hex 118-137)) where the performance data is kept. (Tires, Brakes, Drive train, Transmission, Engine, Turbo, Nitro, Unique (each 4 bytes). The unique is a sum (addition) of the following codes (in hex): 01 = Tire, 02 = Brakes, 04 = Drive train, 08 = Transmission, 10 = Engine, 20 = Turbo, 40 = Nitro, therefore a sum of "7F" arises for all installed Unique.

Since the hex numbers in your slot will be very different to these, you can find the positions for the parts counting them, or looking for them as in a pattern.
To calculate the position for each part can be a little tedious, so it is advisable to look for it pattern-alike, since there are parts of the tuning slots that never change , no matter what car it is. The gray part is one of those.

There are some other thing is this Tuning Slot, but this is not important right now.

[b]2.3 Career Slots[/b]

In Career Slot there are kept the Heat Level, Impound Strikes, Bounty, Infractions, etc. for each car . An entry is 56 bytes (38 hex) long. There are 25 Career Slots in total. (For the 10 purchased cars and the 15 cars you won).
The address of the career slot can be calculated like this:
To the first address of the career slot you add the slot length multiplied by the slot number, for example 0000E2ED + 00*38 = 0000E2ED (this is the first slot, so the number doesn’t change)-

My Golf career slot looks like this:

• Dark blue is the whole Career Slot.
• Pink is the Impound Strikes, and it can have values between 3 and 5.
• Red is the Heat Level. This strange number is a FLOAT value-
• Orange is the bounty.
• Yellow is the number of pursuits evaded.
• Green the number of times you have already been busted.
• Light blue are the number of infractions (8 unserved infraction and then 8 served infractions (each 3 bytes)).

Note about the Heat Level: The highest level you can reach depends from where you are in the career. If you put it at a higher value than you are supposed to, it will be automatically changed to the maximum allowed.

[b]3. How to change the save file[/b]

As said at the beginning, do always make a back-up before changing the save file!

[b]3.1 Finding the Tuning Slot for a car[/b]

1. Open your save file with the hex editor.
2. Seek for the Car Code of your car in the Car Code list (for example Fiat Punto = 117AEEA6 117AEE46). Add to the code the corresponding category number (01 = Stock, 02 = Career, 04 = My Cars, 08 = Bonus, 20 = Special, 42 = Pink Slip). For the fiat Punto in the career it would be 117AEEA6 117AEE46 02.
3. Search with the search editor for the number. For me the result is: 52000000 117AEEA6 117AEE46 02000F00 2001CDCD Yours will be a little different. What is important is the number in red (Tuning Slot number), in this case 20.
4. Search now in hex editor for XXCDCDCD, where XX the tuning slot number of the car found in the previous step (20 for me). Te search result will be the end of the tuning slot. You will have to scroll up to see the whole block.
You can also calculate the address where the toning slot begins (00006B65+(XX*198))

[b]3.2 Changing a part of the Tuning Slot[/b]

1. Seek for the Tuning slot for your car as written in 3.1.
2. Write the Part Code you want in the correct position with the hex editor (see 2.2 for that).
3. Save the file.
4. Fix the checksum with the Save-Editor, so that it is recognized by the game.

[b]3.3 Finding a part code in the Tuning Slot[/b]

1. As written in 3.1, search the Tuning Slot for the car with the unknown part Code.
2. Read the code in the Tuning Slot as made in 2.2 (and copy it down).

There is however a Code List for the arts at the end of this guide. You can read the code from there.

[b]3.4 Finding a Career Slot for a car[/b]

1. Open your save file with the hex editor.
2. Seek for the Car Code of your car in the Car Code list (for example Fiat Punto = 117AEEA6 117AEE46). Add to the code the corresponding category number (01 = Stock ,02 = Career, 04 = My Cars, 08 = Bonus, 20 = Special, 42 = Pink Slip). For the fiat Punto in the career it would be 117AEEA6 117AEE46 02.
3. Search with the search editor for the number. For me the result is: 52000000 117AEEA6 117AEE46 02000F00 2001CDCD Yours will be a little different. What is important is the number in red (Tuning Slot number), in this case 01.
4. If you haven’t changed the number of Impound Strikes for a car, search in hex editor for XXCD03000000, where XX the number of the tuning slot from the previous step is (01 for me).
You can calculate the address: (0000E2ED+(XX*38))

[b]3.5 Making special car available in career mode[/b]

With Special Cars we mean traffic cars and police cars that the player can drive in some of the Challenge Series.
Important: If you used a Tool of the hex editor before, it is possible that you no longer find the cars – use then the alternative method.

1. Open the save file with the hex editor.
2. Search for the Car Code of your car in the Car Code list. (for example: Police SUV (Rhino) = AF2DC3C1 AE75E628 ). Since it is a special car, add to that the number „20“. For the Rhino that would be 117AEEA6 117AEE46 20.
Alternative method: Search in the Car Code. For the rhino it would be „28“. Add that to the Car Slot start address, 00005BC5 28*14 = 00005EE5.
3. Change the „20“ to a 21, so that the car will be available on both categories.
4. Save the file.
5. Fix the Checksum with the Save-Editor.

You can revert the process, to remove the car from the Car Lot. Change the „21“, back to a „20“. If it was made available with a tool, change the „01“, back to a „20“.

[b]3.6 Adding Bonus Cars to Career / My Cars[/b]

Previously: You should have a car like the one of the corresponding Bonus Car in My Cars or in Career, for the which you should copy the corresponding Tuning Slot on.

1. Open the Save Game with the Hex-Editor.
2. Seek for the tuning Slot for the desired Bonus Car in the list. For example for the Ford GT Castrol it would be 1C.
3. Seek in the hex editor for XXCDCDCD, where XX the Tuning Slot number is, in this case “1C”.
4. Select the content of the whole Tuning Slot without the XXCDCDCD, make sure that you have that you selected 404 Bytes (194 hex), and choose “Copy”.
5. Seek for the car code of you car in the car code list (In this case Ford GT = EAA5C042EAA5C042). Add to that a “02” for one in career or a “04” for one in My Cars. In this example, for a Ford GT in My Cars it would be: EAA5C042EAA5C042 04.
6. Seek in the hex editor for this number. My result is 56000000 EAA5C042EAA5C042 04000F00 24FFCDCD. Your will look a little different. Important is the number highlighted in red, in my case 24.
7. Seek in the hex editor for XXCDCDCD, where XX the Tuning Slot we found In the previous step is (24 for me).
8. Select the whole tuning slot, without the XXCDCDCD part, make sure you have 404 Bytes (194 hex) selected, and that the hex editor in “overwrite” mode is, and select “Paste”.
9. Save the file.
10. Fix the Checksum with the Save-Editor.

[b]3.7 Adding cars to the Shop[/b]

[i]Notice: It is not necesary to overwrite an existing car in the Shop. There is enough room to add them in the My Cars / Career cars part.[/i]

1. Open the Save File with the Hex Editor.
2. Look for the of the car you want to add to the Shop in the Car Code List. For example Cross Corvette has the code AF2DC3C1 6D807CD3.
3. Find in the hex editor the first free Car Slot. It is somewhere between the address 00006219 and the address 00006B64. You can recognize a free Car Slot, since it has no car code, meaning it has only FFFFFFFF.
4. Change the car slot number (FFFFFFFF) for the corresponding car slot number for that slot. Is the Slot before where the number 5A, then this one is the 5B (change FFFFFFFF for 5B000000 then).
5. In the following 8 Bytes you should write the Car Code form the step 2, for example AF2DC3C1 6D807CD3.
6. Fill the rest with 01000F00 FFFFCDCD. The whole car slot should look than like: 5B000000 AF2DC3C1 6D807CD3 01000F00 FFFFCDCD.
7. Save the file.
8. Fix the Checksum with the Save-Editor.

[b]3.6 Adding bonus markers[/b]

A bonus marker is 12 bytes long, and they are located from the address 00005739 and forth. There is room for 63 markers.

1. Open the save file with the hex editor.
2. Go to the address 00005739.
3. Find the first free 12-byte block (12 times „00“).
4. Writhe there the code you want.
5. Save the file.
6. Fix the checksum with Save-Editor.

[b]3.9 Editing the money[/b]

1. Open the save file with the hex editor.
2. Go to the Adress 00004039.
3. The 4 Bytes (Address 00004039 - 0000403C) are the players money.
4. With the Windows Calculator (Cientifical) write the amount of money you want in Decimal mode, and the select Hexadecimal mode. For example: 50'000'000 are 02FAF080.
5. Write this number bitewise arround. This would be 80F0FA02. (Translator note: Sorry, the dislexia is killing me see the example and you will understand it.)
6. Save the file.
7. Fix the checksum with Save-Editor.
